Do beardie beards develop over time as they grow? I'm asking because sometimes when I interact with my new baby (about 5 inches) he takes a defensive stance and opens his mouth really wide. To me it looks like he's trying to puff out his beard, except there's no puff -- just the open mouth. Is this normal? It's very cute!

Yep, the little guy is just a little scared. :) Keep handling him with confidence and don't overdo it, he'll grow out of it.

I have to tell you that when I read the title of this posting, it sounded like one of those rhymes we used to do as kids. "Susie sells seashells by the seashore."

Good question though as now I know too for when I get my new baby on the 28th at the reptile show in Sacramento. Yay!

My lil dude does puff his out, but I haven't seen him turn black yet. He's five months. He's puffed a few times at my mom (for some reason!), at being outside/the birds, and mostly when shedding to get the shed off his face.

Tia did beard up when I first got her (the first time the cat jumped up next to the viv) when she was about 2.5 months...it puffed up and got somewhat black, although not solidly black as I've seen from many others in pics. I don't know if that was due to age or due to gender. She hasn't really bearded since (she's about 4 months now). She might just be odd!

Sounds like he's still a bit scared. When Zoey was a baby someone said to me that she looks like she needs a turtleneck. Since she was my first reptile I didn't get the meaning...until I look back at her pics and see what she meant! lol Yes, it will grow. :) When I got mine (at 8 weeks), someone suggested I put something in with her that had our scent on it. I took a pillowcase from my daughter's pillow (since she was SUPPOSED to be my daughter's beardie. Now you can't tear us apart. :D ) and folded it up. It help with the gaping and trying to make herself puff...now, over a year later she is a sweet little cuddle bug. :)

Hope that helps. :)

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
