Hi, I got my baby beardie a week ago (3/7/16) and he/she seemed fine (too young to tell sex but will call he from now on). Fell in love with two of them at PetSmart and brought two home. PetSmart told us that they were a few months old, but upon further research we realized they were probably under a month old.
Brought them home and set up 10gal terrarium with reptile carpet, reptisun 10.0 uvb and 100watt heat lamp, basking rock with cave underneath, and small fake cactus. One was very awake and curious and was eating by the next day, basking, running around on the plant and everywhere. The other was dark and slept all day, and tragically we woke up on the 9th to find a dead baby. We brought him back to PetSmart and decided to focus on our one baby.
We played with him, he explored, he ate 10-20 phoenix worms and calcium dusted crickets per day (no greens yet despite a variety of collard greens, smashed yams, peas, carrots, kale, etc). He got 12-14 hours of heat and uvb, and happily curled up in a warm blanket to go to sleep every night.
Everything seemed perfect until March 17. We got a 50gal tank for him on the 13th as well as some some new decorations (real flagstone stacked to form basking area, reptile climbing vines, reptihammock). We upgraded the size of his water and food dish as well as his reptile carpet, and got a backround. He climbed around, basked happily on his hammock, and ate normally the first few days in his new home.
On the 17th he stopped eating but seemed pretty active. On the 18th he still wasn't eating (we gave him a bath to hydrate him). He was less active and slept while basking. On the 19th he slept all day and didn't eat so we gave him another bath and then decided to force-feed him a few phoenix worms to get nutrients into him. He chewed and swallowed them and seemed to be a bit more active but then he Started keeping his left eye closed. He can open it fine and it doesn't look infected but he keeps it closed 99% of the time.
I'm worried that he got water in his eye? Would that cause this? Is it potentially infected?
This brings us to today (the 20th). He is still not opening his left eye. He still will not eat. I will try force-feeding him later but really prefer not to.
What should I change about his enclosure? His basking temp is 99-105 and his cool area is about 88.
Thank you for reading through this long post to help me with this baby. We really don't want to lose him.
