hey guys, im just wondering if feeding lateralis is the same as feeding dubia. im about to change the diet of my beardie from crickets, to lateralis. i read in another post that dubias are much better than crickets (in terms of smell, cleanliness, noise, behaviour, etc -- is this true?). but my problem right now is that I find dubias quite expensive compared to lateralis. and i know someone who sells lateralis at a good price and he says that dubias here are expensive (in my country). that is why im wondering if feeding lateralis is also good for the beardie. Thanks! :)

I don't know what country you are from, or what the price difference is so that would be an individual decision for you.

Lateralis are a common feeder roach and are good beardie food. Lateralis are smaller in size than dubia so you may require more of them to feed your dragon. Lateralis can also breed faster and at lower temps (so I have read, I have no experience with them) so it would be easier to get a colony started. They run fast though so escapes might be more of a problem compared to dubia.

Maybe someone who breeds lateralis can give you more detailed information.

I have bred and used both. I now only use dubia.
The reason I only use dubia is simple. If you drop a dubia roach you can catch a dubia roach.
When you drop a lateralis it know where its going before it hits the floor and is gone.
Now My basement is very warm due to my breeder racks. Loose roaches can live in my basement...lol

lateralis are very comparable to crickets in size.

dubia and lateralis both can live in similar climates.

Lateralis are VERY fast.

When it comes to the cost, one thing to keep in mind is that's a one time start-up cost. It's like buying a high quality product, it's actually cheaper in the long run because it lasts longer. The first month you don't have to buy feeders, it will pay for itself. Once your colony is up enough to handle daily feedings, you might never have to buy another feeder again, or you could spend money on the treat bugs. Some recommend buying 100 mixed every few months or so to boost your colony, but that's not really that much money.

Technically speaking, you don't have to spend a lot or buy a ton. You could start with just a couple of adults, it would just take a lot longer for your colony to start. Just buy what you can afford, then leave them alone (except for their care). If you can't afford a lot, then just buy some more when you can.

I like both. I'm buying 1000 lateralis from Aaron Pauling because I want to try them out, too. I have a dubia colony but it's not up to supporting my dragons yet, so I need the feeders anyway. I'm hoping I can breed the lateralis and get them going!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
