avocados?

so i just rescued a 4yr old beardie and the owners told me he loves avocados and ate them all the time. what kind of damage might have been done to him internally? i have not given him any more at all. i just wanted to know if it might have caused any problems.

Well first I would say DONT give anymore.Avocados are toxic but to what level in reptiles I am not sure but in avians they are deadly.In theory though they would cause liver and kidney damage and over an extended period of time organ failure.Are you sure they said avocado? I hope your beardie hasnt suffered damage from this and it may be a good idea to have a vet run some bloodwork to test his liver enzymes.Any problems with urates/poop?

I knew they were deadly to birds, i wasnt sure about beardies. I just got him yesterday so i havent seen his poop or urates yet. i am 100% positive she said avocados. he is already in kind of bad shape, he has severe mbd so i was already going to take him to the vet for that, now i will probably ask for blood work too just to make sure. thank you!

Yes its definately not good for them either.Oh poor thing has MBD.What type of UVB do you have?Hopefully the vet will give you some liquid calcium.Good luck at the vet.Let me know how it goes.

right now he is under a repti glo 8.0 its all i could get. the pet stores didnt have any repti sun bulbs. i figured the repti glo was good enough for now seeing as how he wasnt under a uvb or heat source for a few days (the kid forgot it when he took the beardie to his grandmas to get rid of him) i am getting him to a vet as soon as i find one that specializes in reptiles. i dont get paid til friday :x by any chance do you know an estimate of blood work would cost?

Sorry I dont have an estimate for you they vary greatly based on location.The reptiglo 8.0 LINEAR is a decent bulb so long as it isnt a coil/compact your ok.Although if you have a large tank 40 breeder or better then you can get an MVB bulb like the megaray or trex active heat which are fantastic for animals with MBD.
