Automatic Worm Feeder

I am wondering If there is an automatic feeder to bang on the side of my beardie's tank. I was thinking of a small wooden box or something and a moveable plastic slide on the bottom or a disk that would turn on a timer. I am not sure where to start or if anybody has ideas, but please shoot 'em my way.

You can put worms into a small plastic or ceramic container into your beardie's tank. Just make sure the worms can't get over the sides and your beardie can eat them as he/she pleases. I'm not aware of any other way to give your beardie worms.

I personally use the top plastic section of a pre-made pie crust, the sides are low enough that my beardie can climb in, but high enough so that whatever he's eating can't climb out. I also feed dubias, so I don't even mind placing the pie plate in my dragon's tank and then heading off to class, I only have to worry about escapees when they decide to climb up his legs and down over his tail, but they're rarely that smart. Worms on the other hand, are very simple and your dragon still has some room to chase them down so he doesn't swallow 5 at once and forget to chew and swallow (personal experience  )

I also remember someone posting a link that Petsmart, or some kind of pet store, had an "automatic mealworm feeder." It was basically a cup with holes poked in the bottom that the worm would wiggle around and eventually fall through. I would rather use the pie-plate method because I would be concerned with by beardie getting bored and then having worms loose in the tank, but you never know, it could work really well.

There's a couple options for feeders that are more than just a dish, actually.

If you just need a plain dish to offer them in (this is what we do in the stores most of the time), there's inexpensive disposable dishes that are perfect for all mealworm sizes up to Superworms.

There's also a couple "prettier" versions of the same thing, but they do cost a little more.

There's also this one, but to be fair it doesn't really keep in anything larger than giant mealworms, and those get out too if you put in too many.

We've tried these mealworm feeders in the stores, and the beardies in particular figured them out real quick. The only issue I saw with them was that the mealworms kept getting out - so if you put in too many, they'd end up in the substrate. We typically use them in the morning before we intend to clean the cages anyway, so they only have loose mealworms in the cage for a couple hours at most.

They even make ledges if you want to elevate your beardie's worm dish! I use these for my crested geckos and frilleds, not beardies, to be honest, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for beardies in a tall cage too.

Lastly, for crickets (or for roaches/worms, I suppose) you can always use one of these. I had one in use at the store for enrichment for our baby beardies, and one at home for feeding my baby skinks. They figure out the rock quickly and I like to think it keeps them from getting bored. :)

Hope that was helpful!!

I also hope you guys don't mind that I linked to our website - that's where I know for sure to get all these things, and I figured if anyone was actually interested in them in more detail, it'd be easier for them to find them. :) You can always search for the same items cheaper elsewhere, but I'm pretty sure we're the cheapest on all of that. In any case, it makes it easier to get the exact name of the product to search for it!

Let me know if you have more questions or if I can help out any more!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
