Not something I can do anything about I do not live in the states thankfully. Well thankfully in the way if the worst does happen it won't happen to me. Sorry if I sound insensitive I do feel bad for everyone on this site in the states owning a beardie or any other reptile or exotic. Which exotic is really anything that is not dog or cat.

Don't be so sure that this could not happen to you. A re-vamp off all exotic species was just done in BC in March, with no word from the people at all. A lot of species were banned, very recently, including some pythons and boas. Beardies were also talked about being on that list, thankfully they were not.

To the US citizens, I really hope this ban does not go on a whole scope of exotic pets. As I said it just happened in my Province and they basically banned anything poisonous, dangerous, endangered or anything that can get over 9 and a half feet. If you happen to own one of these animals on the list in BC, they are not taken away from you. You must have a permit to keep it though, so even the worst case scenario would more than likely not result in you surrendering your pet.

Since this is still being hashed out by congress, I would not panic yet, but agree that something should be done to make sure that the animals do not get lumped into a large group, resulting in an overall ban. In Canada, we do not have much choice, or even the luxury of that. What is done is done, no vote, no voice. So do everything you can to make sure this does not happen.

Why did you have to remind me about that? But yes in Canada if something is banned it's banned and there is no appealing a law. Just like there is nothing I can do about them still charging GST which was supposed to be a temporaty tax. This temporary tax is now being combined with PST so it is a permanents tax meaning they have lied.

But I still have to pay the tax regardless if it is BS or not. But really the only way you could fix that is if you got every single person to refuse to pay the tax but that is not going to happen. I find any government meddling where it should not as a very bad thing. Governments are given too much control and I mean all governments on the face of the earth. When people are given too much power it corrupts them and then they start to do whatever they want because they can.

According to my husband and the reptile person I know, If you read it in its entirety, it may be harder to buy one IF this bill passes (which it probably won't---they have tried to pass this one many times over the last 15 yrs). It will NOT affect those who ALREADY own the said herps listed (or not listed). So, you will not be asked to give up your beloved pet, but you might now be able to own another one.
Again, only one part of congress is voting on the 23rd and there are 5 more steps after that before it can even be considered passed
So, I will not be worrying unless it gets to step 6

That's true BUT the burden of proof is on us the owners to proove that we have owned said animal previous to the ban. Not saying it will go this far but I am not a fan of this type of legislation.

Maybe we should all chip in and buy the Obama girls a Beardie so if it does get to the point where it's up to the President to sign he will think of his girl's beloved pet reptile. :D

as it has been said earlier in this post. this proposed ban or one like it has consistantly been put up for the past 15 years. each time it gets put down. there is too much money in it. Just sign the petitions send emails to your congressman. But in the end this bill will be dropped just as it always is.

Yeah the thing is, like SuperMom mentioned a few times, I feel like if we keep thinking like that, some may not continue to send letters and such. When that happens, they may think no one is against this anymore, which means they may be able to pass it.

They just wont allow the sale of new animals IF this bill passes and I have put it to prayer to the one I believe in and I am at peace. To Each his own, but I do not see this bill making it. THe vote on April 23rd is just step 1 of a 7 step process to get it passed.

I think that is a great idea!!!

I think a lot of people are missing the point to this. Yes you may be able to keep the dragon you have NOW...but when the time comes for him/her to pass on...and they are outlawed What are you going to do then? People need to stop just thinking of themselves and look at the bigger picture. This would cause many breeders to lose there livelihoods as well as the company's that make reptile products...It sets of a financial down fall that will in the end effect all of us. People say " This bill has tried to be passed before and it didn't get far, so why worry" I think if people looked at any of a number of laws they would see how many times they were at one time voted out. It's not like this could never pass and it is up to us to make our voice hared EVERY time they think of trying to pass this law. It is when we are silent that the only voice that is hared is not our own. So I for one will not be silent and take a chance of this slipping past at any point and time. :protest: :protest:

Hello,

Definitely keep writing letters or calling. I have written several letters as well & passed the information around too.
This is a good example of what happens when we stop paying attention to politics & who is running what in this country. This is just one more thing that they want to do to control us or tax us even more.
Take a look around at what is going on TODAY in this country that is not a free country anymore. There are TONS of TEA parties going on everywhere, which means, (Taxed Enough Already), & protests of taxes & the looming prospect of carbon taxes as well. If they are trying to take our rights of owning an exotic away, think about what else are they could be trying to do to us that people don't realize?

Numerous letters have been sent by me already and just came from one tea party :blob8: Tracie is right, we have to keep this up, otherwise what else will we lose if we don't keep after the powers that be????

I did a breakdown for a friend who didn't SEE it.

Well we already have pet species that are failing due to no new introduced genetics. My finches as example. No new blood means eventually within a few generations inbreeding will destroy them.

They are also talking about enforcing euthanasia of existing certain species causing trouble…in the homes.

The states have varied climate that would kill some species they are talking about preventing import and breeding anyway so what is bad for CA would die up here in winter anyway.

Seriously This was up once before but never got the attention I’m getting in my email from a lot of various groups.

Non native. You ready to give up your Sheltie? Scotland, My Keeshond? Dutch Flemish Norway, The reptiles in my house? Asia Africa Australia. The lists have not been made. the instructions on making those lists are in this document. So we don't knwo if other pets are to be accounted for as well. This has been proposed by Guam. This is a LOCAL problem for Guam and should not be on the nations plate. They have invasive non-native species troubles there and it is an island. THAT is a critical point. Do this state by state not national.

Introduction into can be accidental t…or a pet release, transport, buying selling breeding not just IMPORT. The very purpose suggests individuals too…look below.

The purpose of this Act is to establish a risk assessment process to prevent the introduction into, and establishment in, the United States of nonnative wildlife species that will cause or are likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to other animal species' health or human health.

(f) Animals Owned Lawfully Prior to Prohibition of Importation- This Act and regulations issued under this Act shall not interfere with the ability of any person to possess an individual animal of any species if such individual animal was legally owned by the person before the risk assessment is begun pursuant to subsection (e)(3), even if such species is later prohibited from being imported under the regulations issued under this Act.

This individual animal precludes my TWO balls and my TWO dragons. I can have 1 not 2.

(2) transport between any State by any means whatsoever any nonnative wildlife species that is not included in the list of approved species issued under section 4;
(4) possess (except as provided in section 3(f)), sell or offer to sell, purchase or offer to purchase, or barter for or offer to barter for, any nonnative wildlife species that is prohibited from being imported under paragraph (1);
(6) breed any nonnative wildlife species that is prohibited from being imported under paragraph (1), or provide any such species to another person for breeding purposes.

This will destroy the pet trade. That means existing and captive bred animals cannot be shipped to buyers further quartining the existing breeding pool of genes.

(a) In General- The Secretary may issue a permit authorizing importation otherwise prohibited under section 6(a)(1), for scientific research, medical, accredited zoological or aquarium display purposes, or for educational purposes that are specifically reviewed, approved, and verified by the Secretary, if the Secretary finds that there has been a proper showing by the permittee of responsibility for the specimen and continued protection of the public interest and health with respect to the specimen.

This means every sanctuary has to be approved and pay fees….and we know about testing and fees don’t we.

We are talking about an entire industry being forced out of business. That will effect evry one trying to FEED such animals too.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
