Arcadia 12% D3+ in crossfire type encl

So, plans are underway for the 'crossfire' type enclosure I'm going to build. It will be the standard 4'x2'x2' 3/4" melamine with 18"x24" 1/4" thick glass by-passing panels for the front (have already ordered the hard-to-find rails!), and I am now finalizing the lighting. Going to use the same venting as in the crossfire design, btw.
Ok, so... T5 is the way to go. While I am completely new to reptiles, I have kept fish and grown orchids most of my life. I converted to T5's in my hood when they first came out, and for the first time have been able to maintain a nicely planted aquarium. The orchids and even hard to bloom cactus love the 4' T5's in my light stand. They are amazing lights, so I'm not surprised to read how folks in the reptile business are promoting them here! Because I have used the Sunleaves fixtures and like their quality, I wanted to go with their t5 strip light fixture in the 3' length. I see that Arcadia has a fixture too, but like I said, I'm familiar with the Sunleaves and know what I'm getting there. http://www.wormsway.com/detail.aspx?sku=STSL130
Only thing is, looking at the LightYourReptiles site for Arcadia, they show the 12% D3+ bulb as a 34" bulb. I am used to seeing standard T5 bulbs in 2', 3', and 4' lengths. Can I assume Arcadia is just a little more vigilant in their description of the bulb? Sunleaves and others sell T5's in "3 foot" lengths. I mean, the Arcadia bulb is a standard sized T5 that will work in any T5 3' fixture, RIGHT? Just want to make sure, because I see LightYourWay bundles the 12% D3 T5 with a fixture too- hate to just order the bulb and find out it won't fit in my existing Sunleaves 3' fixture!
Being as my enclosure is white melamine, I do not want a reflector in my UVB T5 fixture. My plant stand fixture has a very nice reflector... to say the T5's put out a little heat with a boost from a good reflector is an understatement, believe me. I see that Arcadia's has a double fixture, and recommend 6500K bulb be used in conjunction with the UVB. I mean, those T5 grow bulbs put out a lot of lumens. 3300 lumens in the 3' length. Is this second T5 meant to replace the basking light? If not, and you add a basking light too, well... how much light is too much? What I was planning was just having the 3' T5 (34"??) and a directed bright white bulb for basking, and then a ceramic bulb for heating as necessary. But, if it would be better, I have no problem adding a second 3' T5 with a grow bulb... I just think a basking would still be required and wonder if this is too much light. What do ya'll experts think would be ideal? I mean, that's the whole reason to build your own, to get it just right! Thanks in advance for any and all advice !!!!!

Already have changed my mind-
after speaking with the nice guy at LightYourReptiles, I have come to understand that under cabinet mounting of T5 HO fixtures is not recommended- due to the heat build up, the ballasts will suffer a shortened life..... apparently it's best to mount such fixtures on top of the enclosure. Therefore, the Sunleaves undercabinet fixture I posted a link of is really not appropriate for this application.
I would still really like to have the bulbs inside, under the ceiling - and I'm wondering now if it would be OK to get a good quality ballast and mount it outside the enclosure, then wire to end caps for the bulbs, which would be mounted under a reflector which is in turn mounted to the ceiling. I wired a similar situation for my aquarium, the ballast is outside of the hood. Anybody gone this route and sourced any good suppliers? Thx!

edit: perhaps something like the high temp T5 sockets you'll see on this page, if you scroll down... http://www.northcoastpets.com/lighting_parts.htm

The path you are taking is the same one I am taking as well.

I ordered my T5 ends from North Coast Pets as well. Still waiting for them to arrive, but they just shipped like 2 days ago and I opted for cheap shipping.

I ordered an Advance ballast that I plan on mounting on the top of the vivarium. https://ceramicmh.3dcartstores.com/IEZ2S24D35M_p_381.html

I'm mounting them in a vivarium made from Red Oak Plywood that has been stained and sealed with Polyurethane.

Please post when you get this thing together! Love to see what you do!!!
I couldn't tell whether the end caps from North Coast were shunted or not. Did you get the stands to go along with the caps? Guess you want non-shunted with that ballast. Looks awesome! If you don't mind, what vivarium controller do you have that will operate the ballast?
I was kind of leaning towards the instant start ballasts as they are - uh - more cost effective. So would require shunted end caps... Figured instant start OK for this app since you're not flipping lights on and off all the time, and you're replacing bulbs once or twice a year anyway... but then, I wasn't thinking about sunrise/sunset effect...
Wow, can't wait to see, be sure to post!

The ballast is a "Programmed Start" ballast, which needs a non-shunted socket. You can always add a shunt to a non-shunted socket any time.

This is the vivarium controller I have been eyeing. http://ecozonevivarium.com/products-vivarium-controllers.aspx. Does pretty much everything. I've looked at other controllers, but they seem to be missing features here and there that the eco-zone controller has. Although, it is pretty pricey.

Edit:

Oh, and I do plan on using an Arcadia D3+ in one socket set and some normal 6500k bulbs in the other socket set http://1000bulbs.com/product/2363/FHO-24T5865ECOG.html

very cool. and because you posted on this thread, i take it you will installing your 2' lighting in a 4x2x2 enclosure? i was actually looking at the 3' for mine, but certainly from all i've read about the 12% bulb from Arcadia, 2' would be fine...
seriously- keep us posted! and thanks for those links!

My plan is for 2x 2' light tubes. One on each side of the Vivarium. The basking side will get the UVB bulb and the other side will get the regular bulb.

I'm still a ways off from completing the Viv. I only get an hour or so each day to work on it and most of my work right now requires me to be outside to either stain the wood or apply the polyurethane, but it's been either too cold, or raining.

Here's a pick I took a while ago. Still a work in progress.

at least you're a lot farther along than me! WAY too cold to be cutting on melamine outside, that's for sure!
Looks great, have you decided how to do the front yet? That's actually the only thing I've done so far, ordered some rails that 'should' work for 2 18x24" 1/4"thick glass by-passing panels. Figure if I can't find rails, I'm gonna have to modify my design significantly, so that's where I've started.

I'm going to use sliding 1/4" Acrylic. I already have the rails and the Acrylic. Rails came from Amazon and the Acrylic came from Home Depot. The two hardest pieces to find I believe were the rails and the vents. I couldn't find the exact kind/color I wanted, so I had to make due with what was available.

At this point, I'm working on the Trim pieces which are solid Red Oak pieces. I've gotten most of the work done, just need another coat of Polyurethane.

I try to get as much as I can from Home Depot or Lowes since I get a permanent 10% discount on everything (Military Veteran).

Cool beans!
Thanks for your service!
Yea, I'm more than a little concerned the rails I got are not going to handle the glass. But I can't find anything locally to even look at, so just had mail order something (from these guys, in my case http://www.outwatercatalogs.com/lg_display.cfm/catalog/Master_2012/page/316 ) and will have to eat 'em if they don't cut it.
All the other stuff will come from, as you say, Lowes and Home Depot (except for the lighting!).

[edit]
the rails i got are perfect, they'll do just fine with the heavier glass - unfortunately home depot no longer sells the 1/4" glass panels which i saw listed on their website. and lowes, if they even still do, only carried the 1/8" "picture frame" glass way too thin. so I'll have to get them at a glass shop, instead. bit more $$ :x

What did you think of the end caps? Were they indeed non-shunted? I know you may not be wiring that stuff up yet, but when you do I'd like to see how you end up mounting both the end caps and the ballast...

Actually, the endcaps are already mounted and wired in. The ballast is still on route though and should be delivered on the 30th. I'll post a new pic of the setup when the ballast is in. So look for it tomorrow night.

The caps are non-shunted. And it looks like they use the same housing as the endcaps for T8, so they look really big with the T5 in them. But it's not a big deal.

Ok, got the ballast in.

I wish I could test the dimming, but I don't have a Rheostat to test it with.

The UVB light sits about 13" from his basking. You would want to keep the higher output T5/HO lights (Arcadia D3+ and Reptisun 10.0) between 12-20 inches away.

ok, you have convinced me, i will be ordering those end caps. did you say what was the width of your enclosure? i don't think i saw it in the previous posts....

it is looking very nice! i am not sure i will be able to match your workmanship - but at least i have something to aim for.

now, what do you think about reflectors? do you think you will want to add them? the recommendations i was looking at from arcadia seemed to be based on their lamp with a reflector. also, interestingly, their recommendations for bearded dragons in terms of UVB energy is quite a bit more than, say, what ZooMEd says ... 13 uW/cm2 vs 70 - 200 uW/cm2....

also----- if i end up with the cheaper ballast, i hope you will not mind me asking, down the road, exactly how to add a shunt to a non-shunted end cap!

It looks beautiful- please keep on posting as I am looking forward to seeing the end result!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
