Your gonna need a huge coloney for the babies to be able to actively feed from it. But, it can be done with the right setup, room, and number of bins.

I haven't found a beardie yet that doesn't go nuts over roaches.
Does anyone have a beardie that doesn't like them? Just wondering.
I feed them to hatchlings right up to my adults.
When my beardies see me going toward the roach enclosure they go absolutely bananas.
Some pet stores might sell them in your area. You could just buy a few to see how they go over.
That's what I did before I bought my colony. I even tried breeding from the ones I got at the store
first to make sure this was something I could do. Within a couple of weeks I had several babies so
that's when I decided to order. Turks were totally doable.

You won't find dubia at pet store (big chains), as they are an allergy issue for various people. I honestly believe if dubia ever make it to petco they will become a banned species really fast....their frass is a knarly allergen, and prolonged exposure will really irritate your lungs (for those with allergic proclivities).
It would be possible for petstores to sell certain species, but the whole roach stigma will make it very rare to find common feeder roaches in pet stores. People can deal with noisy smelly short lived crickets, but the thought of an amazingly clean and slow moving roach drives them crazy!

Not true! :)
Maybe not the big chains, but the independent owned store do in Fresno, CA. I know of 3 of our local
pet stores that carry Dubias an one of them carries Turks along with lobsters an a few other varies.
One of these stores are the ones that actually got me interested in the roaches as feeders.
Like I mentioned in a prior post I purchased Turks from a local pet store. An tried breeding just a few first before I ordered my colony. I'm sure that other Californians can also say they have seen these roaches at pet stores for sale. I now of a few stores South of me and a few stores North of me in California that also sell roaches. They sell roaches as pets even.

The reasons I went with Turk's vs Dubai's was because the Turk's were 25 cents a piece and the Dubai's were 80 cents a piece. Plus I read the nutritional value of each on this site;
http://www.feedersinc.com/insect-comparison/

The only State that I know for sure that some varieties of roaches are outlawed is Florida. Texas might have restrictions on some varieties too, but this I'm not positive about. There may even be other States that there are restrictions in that I'm not aware of. But in California the only roaches that are considered a problem are the Russian Roach which are the ones that infest ones home or restaurants.

There maybe rules and regulations that they are not following. :dontknow:

As long as a feeder roach has it's needs met it has no reason to look for new areas to infest.
So really there isn't a worry of infestation if you care for them properly.

Edit:
I also wanted to add that a lot of the places that you purchase roaches online are actually located in California.

I'm not familiar with your area, but look at the independently owned stores not the large chain stores.
L.A. area is much bigger than the Fresno area so I'm positive there is somewhere that carries them.
I'd get out the phone book and start calling the ones that aren't to far to go and see if they carry roaches as feeders. Just a thought!

Check out some of your little reptile shops. People sometimes hang out there and talk to them. They may know of someone that is willing to part with a sampler pack for you. Also I found a local source at the local bug club forum and got 250 dubia for $30. He gave me easily that many and ensured I had extra adult females and several large female nymphs. Total I believe 60-70.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
