Any advice?

I adopted Captain Hook 4 days ago. I'm sure his name raises questions so ugly as it is, here goes. He/She was purchased at the same time as another beardie from a local pet store. After a little over a month's time the terrible miserable sorry excuse for a human who originally purchased him/her, brought the beardies back to the pet store. One had normal growth while the Captain was 1/2 the other one's size, was bleeding from his feet and toes. Seems the buyer didn't feed properly or enough and therefore the Captain was eaten upon. As in his entire front left foot is missing and the stub is swollen at the end. The other feet all have varying degrees and numbers of missing toes. He is now in my care and I'm doing my best however, I'd like any tips on caring and feeding him. The Captain is very shy, hates noises, the louder they are the more he hates. Startles easily. Doesn't really seem to know how to eat. He doesn't 'strike' at the food he just opens his mouth slightly without moving his head forward and closes. I have to be pretty fast to get anything in his mouth. I have gotten him to eat some every day, he poops daily and his cage and lighting are keeping correct temperatures. Any suggestions other than just loving this poor little creature? Thank you!

Hi!
I rescued a beardie in a similar situation back in August. He was missing his front arm (above his "elbow"), the stub still bleeding, was missing toes, had a very stubbed tail (missing upwards of 2.5 inches!), and a bloody face. He was also very thin and emaciated. At first he ate well, but then he went off his food for a few weeks. I was able to force feed him, and eventually he started eating again on his own. He has since gained 150 grams, and grown several inches. His face wounds have healed, and his stub wound also has.

How are you doing with the feeding? Is he gaining weight? If you think that he is getting enough food, you could just continue doing what you are doing and he will most likely start eating on his own eventually. He might be too weak or hurt to catch food right now, maybe due to the swollen stub (keep an eye on that!). Also, what are you giving him? If you are feeding him crickets, try switching to something that's easier to catch, like worms or pellets. You could try soft pellets if he can't eat the hard dry ones. A warm bath for 15 minutes several times per week might encourage him to eat and will help with any dehydration.

If you feel that he isn't getting enough food, you can try using baby food. I had to feed one of mine baby food for a while once when she had a respiratory infection (not the rescue). If you decided to do that, you would give him chicken baby food meant for the earliest stages (that type is the thinnest and is easier to put in a syringe and easier to digest), and some butternut squash baby food also earlier stages. Adjust the amounts according to his age (more protein if he's younger, less if older) and the milliliters according to weight (use common sense, and at the beginning, start out with a small amount to avoid shock). I would use an oral syringe (no needle!). To get the food in, you could put some on his snout to see if he starts licking and then slowly squeeze it into his mouth, or you could try prying his mouth open carefully. Make sure to use a plastic syringe, not a glass one. They sometimes bite the tips off. Inspect the tip with each use. The tip will get chewed up quickly if you're putting it into his mouth, and you wouldn't want him to swallow it. You can get syringes at any pharmacy for free. Just ask for one. I'd recommend getting a 5ml syringe, no needle.

As for his stress level, try to put him in the quietest room in the house, away from any other beardies, and try not to handle him for anything other than necessity. Do you have a picture of him? It would help me evaluate his condition.

Good luck!

I greatly appreciate your input Mazais! He has got to where he eats 4-6 mealworms and sometimes up to 8 crickets twice a day. He seems to be doing well with his eating. And he's also leaving bowel movements everyday. But I have noticed he tries to get away whenever I have him out of his cage. He has also puffed his beard out at me. Does this mean he'll be a more aggressive adult? He has bitten a couple of times but that has been only at feeding and both times he bit, he was trying to get a cricket from the fingers as we hold it for him or use tongs. I have no idea how to post a picture on the internet but I'll ask my Son for assistance.
Once again, thank you for your input!!!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
