Another fake rock creation (images)

We recently bought our beardie, Miss-T a bigger home, but didn't have much to fill it with. After reading several topics on here we decided we'd have a go at creating a fake rock for her. We read several tutorials on how to do it, and to be honest the more we read, the more confused we got!!

We used the left over polystyrene from the new viv packaging to create the basic shape of the rock. We wanted some stairs / a ramp going up to the basking area, and a small cave underneath. We used scissors to cut the shapes and a glue gun to stick each of the pieces together. After creating a big mess we ended up with the following:

Please bear in mind my artistic skills are limited at the best of times so I wasn't expecting miracles. Once we had this basic shape, we read a lot tutorials mentioning expanding foam. I had a look in the garage and found a tin of my dads... BUT there was no nozzle to fasten to the top. Whoops. Not wanting to go out and buy another tin, I used a pointed piece of wood to press the valve down. This made it extremely hard to get the foam where we wanted so instead we blathered the whole of the polystyrene in it! After it had dried, we calved it with a bread knife ( ) and ended up with the following:

A bit of a mess but nevermind... We then used some sandstone coloured grout to add a total of three layers, each getting progressively thicker. Once these had set, we were on to the sealing. This was the part that baffled us the most. There are different sealers mentioned on guides, from pond sealant to boat sealent... and we were restricted by a low budget and... not much of a clue. We ended up going for some waterproof PVA - watered down. It might not be the most ideal sealant but others have commented on their successful fake rocks using PVA, it's safe and easy to get hold of.

We put on one layer of PVA and used a sieve to sprinkle sand on top. Once this had set I used a brush to get rid of the excess sand, and the result is as follows:

I've just put another layer of PVA on, with at least two more to go. I'm in two minds as to putting another layer of sand on before we finish - opinions please?

Thanks for reading :) Can't wait to get it in the viv!

Wow that is awsome. I got a new Viv for Alvin and it is so empty. Some day I am going to attempt to do something like that.

I gotta be honest, I loved what you had before you foamed it. The end result is nice, but the pre-foam piece looks like a lot of hard work went into it for the foam to cover up all that detail.

We planned at the beginning to have a shape where you could see the detail created with the polystyrene, but that all changed when we couldn't find the nozzle for the expanding foam! We would have preferred to have it look how you mentioned, and will probably take it easy with the foam if we ever get round to making another one...

I LOVE it! What would you charge to make one of those??
 Glad you like it! I don't think I'd have the time or patience to make several of these - though the OH seems keen!
Some of the materials we already had so it cost us a total of £17.23 ($26.96) where if we had nothing it would've cost about £27.79 ($43.49)

I'll have to post some pictures of the stuff I did for my leopard gecko setup on here sometime. I agree that foam can get.... a bit out of hand real fast lol. I didn't actually use any of it on the gecko setup, but I used some on a different setup a long time ago. A lot of effort goes into making these things, and I'd have to say a few pennies would have to be charged to make it worthwhile, but for a custom piece I can't say it'd be too bad. Especially since the petcosmartlandworld (tm) charges an arm and a leg for their generic (and SMALL) deco pieces in their stores. I'd almost be willing to do a piece or two of something like this if the person wanting them know what they were after. Wouldn't be a profitable endeavor, but I'd love to see other people's dragon's enjoying my handiwork lol. (since it's the only thing I'm very good at building :banghead: lol )

I think it looks great, I really like the coloration. Looks much more like "rock" thank some of the other pieces i've seen. Still waiting to make my first rock art...........not quite brave enough yet.

Sealed the rock and let it cure/dry or whatever it does, and put in in her empty looking tank. Just a couple of pictures of MissT exploring her new furniture:

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
