Allie, my baby

I got Allie last Saturday with very little research, experience, and only a few items for her. It's been a rocky start because I got three different stories from two different people and misleading websites. I told the pet store I was getting a beardie and wasn't sure of her size yet because I was going to pick her up. (She sold me a dozen crickets.) Petland's associate told me I needed a ninety gallon tank and other things. He said he knew all about Beardies and how they need to live. Well, he had two males together and they fought constantly. I wasn't going to follow his tale of a ninety gallon tank. Then he told me I needed calcium sand which I did buy. I'll not use it. :p So you guys don't have to be worried about Allie.

When I rescued Allie from her previous owners, they had promised a 29 gallon long tank, basking lamp which they gave me, but it was broken, and a well used heat mat that wouldn't stick to the bottom of her tank. (The tank she was in was a fifteen gallon tank that had broken glass. I knew right away this wouldn't be her home and went to buy another tank and a few other supplies such as: A 50 watt basking light, a 10 gallon tank-too small, a heat mat (House gets cold, used to heat the bottom of the tank at night), a climbing piece, a food bowl, a hide-way converted into a bathing area, and a plant.) I took in the basking lamp to get another one and they fixed my lamp for me! I was glad I didn't have to spend anymore money on another lamp.

And Allie was starving. She didn't eat anything all day from her previous owners. When I asked them if she ate, they said no. When I fed her, she ate all of the crickets and had none for the next day. They couldn't afford to feed her. (Sure she's expensive, why did you get her in the first place?) They fed her crickets every day with very little veggies. I couldn't let her just eat crickets. The first thing Allie ate was a spring mix salad. She picked through all of the lettuces and ate the dandelion greens. She likes dandelion greens a lot but I can't find them except in those spring mix salads. I give her parsley, banana, and a sliver of strawberry as a treat. She also likes celery leaves.

Since the ten gallon was too small for her, I went searching for another tank. Something a bit larger than a ten. I found a twenty gallon tall with a background. A fish background, but she loves it none the less. She didn't know what to make at first because she had a change of scenery. Everything of hers almost fits. She's got two more plants, a new 75 watt bulb that works wonders now. The tank's between 87. Close enough to the nineties. She's not used to the 100s yet. (I don't know if her previous owner had her in the 100s or not as a basking temperature. The tank goes into the mid-70's at night.) She's regular now. No more abnormal poops. She poops every day at 3:00-3:20, after she eats her crickets. Today's the first time she ever pooped and peed early at 11:00. If I can get her to go, she looks happy. :)

Allie loves to run around and explore. If she had her way, she'd have her run of my room and practically the whole house. I've got three dogs that stay in doors. I'm trying to protect her against them. I set up a basking point near my sliding glass window on the old 10 gallon tank. I also found that doggie pads, the large size, are a good way to catch her poop and pee. She has made it the habit of not going in her tank. So she's clean. After that, she got upset because her colors were black this morning. I told her she didn't have to worry about going into the tank today yet. I told her that she's a good girl and she could come out because she pooped and peed already.

A warm bath and a massage seems to help her go and holding onto my hand while she goes, makes her feel better. Does any of the young beardies do this? They run to you for help when they relieve themselves? I know she's getting plenty of food and water. I know she's eating right because the first time she pooped, it was hard. Now it's not as hard as it was. It's not runny either so that's a good thing.

Allie's 13 inches and is a dare devil. Climbing a portable screen that was hanging over our sink, she jumps right in and looks like she didn't do anything wrong. More like saying, 'Look Mommy! I jumped for you!' Then the second time, I had her on my bed with some sheets and a huge pillow mountain. I was working on my laptop, she decided to use my blanket as a slide and slid down between me and the bed. I had put a teddy bear behind me in case she tried it again. She had the same kind of look again, 'Look Mommy! I did it again!' I swear, she had the biggest grin on her face. I think she's happy when I'm around her.

Bedtime. Oh, you must hear this! When I first got her, she wouldn't sleep in her tank. I had to rock her, stroke her, and tell her it's all right. She fell asleep on me. Then after that, I started to get her used to the tank and she fell asleep where she lay down. I moved her so she wasn't sleeping on the heat mat all through the night. Didn't want her belly to get burned. But anyway, she began to really feel different. I took an old flannel pillowcase and wrapped her around in it. As long as she could crawl out when she wakes up, she's fine with it. I rocked her to sleep in it. Tell you what, she was sleeping over the heat mat with her flannel pillowcase where she sleeps. I haven't thought of using a flannel pillowcase for her. There's also another thing about her that you should know. She doesn't sleep anywhere else in her tank. She doesn't sleep on her basking branch, rock, or near her watering pool. She sleeps right near the fan. I guess it helps her sleep. White noise and the vibration. So I guess I'll have to have it there for a long time to come and that's great because she's one of a kind with a personality.

She does love sleeping on me. As of right now, she's sound asleep on my chest. She's happy. :blob5:

Allie changed genders. She is a he! He doesn't care whether or not his name's Allie or Ali. :) But he's still going be my little baby beardie who loves to cuddle with his mommy and here I was buying all girly stuff for him. Oh well! I figured he would love seeing something colorful and soft. :)

better get him like some camo fleece or something...

I should. I got him a flannel plaid pillow case of purple and red. I, um, got him a girly pillow sham for a bed. It's got flowers. Heck, maybe I'll get him a Transformers pillow case and sheet set or something else. :) LOL. I even got him a pink receiving blanket and one with flowers. I can tell you he doesn't care what color or I bundle him in. He loves bright colors. :)

Allie's found his favorite spot. On my stomach all puffed out like he's basking.

adorable... I'll have to post the pic of Pumpkin last night after bath time... which I'll remind you he hates... and climbs out as soon as he can, almost like he goes to the highest point to get away... which is usually my head, I'll post it under my thread, pumkin yenko & hot rod

Look forward to seeing the pic. Allie (Ali) Doesn't like his bath. He tries to climb out even if it's lukewarm. He waits until it's like to his liking which is slightly warm. Then he sits in it and have a soak.

And my digital thermometer: I got it from Walmart and it's been showing two readings. Tank temps would show 77 degrees first then 69 degrees next. I'm going to get a new one one day and measure his basking spot.

Well, I did get a new one last week and it read celsius instead of degrees. Oh well. His basking spot is 100.4 with a cool side of 80.

Found out by the vet, Ali's got pinworms and a bacterial infection. He's on antibiotics and a dewormer. Here's the thing: I do daily spot cleans whenever he went to the bathroom in his tank. I tripled the layers of paper towels in his tank. Seems to be happier with the triple layers of paper towels. I kept thinking about the crickets and have been wondering if they gave him the pinworms, but that's impossible because they are kept in clean conditions. The only thing I might have to change is their egg crate stuff. I already changed out their paper towel substrate, eliminated their humidity issues, and feed them fresh food and gel-water every day.

Ali's feeling better today. He took a 10 minute bath under a ceramic heat emitter. I don't want him too cold especially since he's been ill with the bacterial infection. I'm going to pick up some soy yogurt to help his gut flora. I told the vet that someone else had him before me and their husbandry skills were questionable. I don't know how long he's had this so I can only assume that the infection was there when they gave him a home in an unclean fish tank made for a chameleon. Now he's got a permanent home with a loving mommy.

And he's feeling much better because he's on Albon and Panacur. I've been feeding baby food(s) Squash, sweet potatoes, applesauce, pears, and peaches. I fixed him a salad hoping he'd eat everything. I mixed the squash and sweet potatoes together and let him have some on his salad along with some dobs of applesauce. Well: the result: He ate all the baby food and all his salad. He was like he was in a feeding frenzy! He hasn't had much of an appetite for the past few days, but now he eats like a teenager with a bottomless pit! Yes! I know he's feeling better because he ate all his salad. :) Now I'm going to give him some of his crickets for this morning. I didn't feed him for the entire fifteen minutes. I thought he was going to want more squash and sweet potatoes. By the time he was done eating, he had a mess on his face. He really enjoyed his baby food. :)

I hope he feels better soon

Thank you. They said that the Albon would be harsh on their stomachs and he won't eat much because the Albon's going to kill off the good bacteria in his gut. What if he still has some good hence the eating like a teenager with a bottomless pit. He was dewormed yesterday afternoon. Pinworms: do they die quickly once dewormed? I'll be :study: this. :)

Update: Ali's doing much better since the antibiotics and dewormer. His appetites starting to increase from the soy yogurt I give him. He's eaten his salad good, baby food, beardie bites, and crickets. I'm glad he's perking up. For the first time, he showed an interest in his first cartoon called Transformers Prime. I think it has to do with the noise and action. He watched the fifteen minute ending of it before a new show came on and he lost interest. He even didn't want to go into his bed last night. :)

Actually, she's a he. I found out just recently because he's got the two bulges before his tail instead of one.

He showed interest in Transformers Prime again. I think he likes Peter Cullen's voice. He's got a crush on his vet, too. He heard her voice and tried to go to her when she was in the next room. :) He even showed his beard to her. LOL.

Update on Ali....

He sure is one wacky beardie. Yesterday, he explored a new 'cave' I made out of cardboard. There's two openings for him to come out and look out. So anyway, he went in, explored, scratched the back of the 'cave', and came out of the other door next to him. When he came out, he had this 'grin' on his face. (They have expressions.) Anyway, he's feeling adventurous and wacky. He climbed on his 'cave' today to bask in his sunlight for the first time in days. He hasn't been able to take the sunlight because it bothered him. I had it on four hours, no longer. Meds make him sensitive to sunlight.) He's eating better as well. I looked at the bearded dragon balls I've giving him. They don't stimulate his appetite. It's called Bearded Dragon food. It's a red small ball and he eats them everyday in his salad.

I changed his feeding schedule-or he has. He sleeps later now and eats around 9-10 A.M. I figure as much as he gets his sleep and rest. I had him in his tank for five days to rest, bask, and get better. I handled him for a few minutes because I didn't want him to stress out and run around wasting his energy. See, if I let him run loose, he'll be using all his energy to get better on running around.

He's now basking. I mean really basking and not trying to get out. He'll glass dance, but he's not jumping. He's improving and I've noticed that he's keeping his warmth. I noticed that before his meds, he was cold all the time. I couldn't keep him warm. Now he's warmer. His belly's warmer than before. Ali's on the road to recovery. :) :blob8: :headbang: :love5: :sleepy2:

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
