Hey guys, it's that time!
Chippo is officially in puberty. Yup. My sweet little angel now stomps around the house with a flared up black beard, spins around and gets defensive at any sign of a reflection, and in general is just a very grumpy goose.
I've seen a lot of people on here wondering what's going on with their dragon, so here's the deal: around 6-8 months old, lots of dragons get very touchy. They're going through puberty. Yay !
Now, I wanted to get some advice on helping through this transition. There's not a ton that we pet parents can do, but we can try our best right?
What I've done so far is blacked off the tank so he can't see his reflection (although he scratches at the paper I've put there. I originally put fabric but he climbed it and tore it down). I am quite patient with him, his eating is wildly unpredictable, which is to be expected at this time. Some days he won't touch anything, other days he'll eat all of the protein I can give him, some other days he'll just nibble at salad all day. It's a day by day process.
I give him time outside of his tank, but after about five to ten minutes he'll be outside of his tank wanting back in. He's going through the change, he doesn't want to hang out with him momma anymore!
I think the most beneficial thing that I've done is quite simple, I've moved his log against the sides of the tank to create a cave. He really enjoys hiding in there, he'll stand in the mouth of his "den" and flare at the lights (because there's not much else to flare at).
I think the biggest thing is just being patient. They'll grow out of it.
Anyone else have advice for puberty? When it first started I tried to find a thread like this but I couldn't! Just lots of people confused as to what was happening. What would you guys recommend to someone who's concerned about their dragon's changing?
