So I got my beardie in the beginning of November. I was concerned that he didn't have much of an appetite and was not growing so took him to a vet about a month later. The vet was terrible but I got a fecal exam done was told he had coccidia and was prescribed albon, a 13 day treatment. I've been giving it to him for 3 days and he seems like he's dying. Yesterday he was lethargic and had massive amounts of diarrhea. I haven't given him the Albon yet today but all morning he was just sitting there with his mouth agape and when i tried to give him a bath he just went limp on me and i thought he was dead so I freaked out and gave up. The vet was a ***** so I feel like calling there for advice would be useless. Now he's just lying slumped on the ground with his eyes closed. Please help.

Hi. I'm sorry about your little one. I would try giving him some soy yogurt any flavor. It helps their tummy feel better when they are on harsh antibiotics. Make sure to give him a bath evey day so he stays hydrated.

Hello,

Albon can be particularly harsh on the system for them.
What is the strength of the solution & the dose given to him? What is his weight?
It almost sounds like he may have received too much, based on your description. I would hold off giving him anymore right now until we figure out what's going on with him.
Can you give some extra oral fluids, a bath & any probiotics to him?
Can you review your tank set up with us, such as the type & brand of UVB lighting, supplementation & temperatures?

Let us know how he is doing.

Unfortunately, he passed shortly before you replied. My vet was a fool and I think might have prescribed too high of a dose for his fragile little body to handle. It saddens me that your can find more support on a free discussion forum than in veterinary care that you over pay for . He was unhealthy before i even got him but i became really attached and wanted to try to save him. Unfortunately it was to late. I work at a pet store and am appalled by the way the animals are cared for. They're treated worse than cans of cat food. R.I.P Buttermonk

Thanks for your support. I wish I could post a picture of him, but I don't know how. I plan on getting another one and hopefully it will be healthy and I will have better luck. And not using that vet again. Unfortunately I think he was so sick before I got him that I didn't have much of a shot. I'm the brief time that I had him I really fell in lobe with the little guy though. He will be missed.

Hello,

Oh no, I am so sorry for your loss of your baby.
It is possible the dose was too high, which can be very toxic to their system.
Let us know if you need anything.

Thanks again. The people on this forum have really been incredibly helpful and supportive. I'm really upset that a vet with no real knowledge of reptiles or concern for their well being or the fact that their owners might actually care about them is aloud to falsely proclaim them self a reptile vet and make people pay them to essentially murder their animal. This douche actually told me albon was a very mild drug with no side affects and that it "caused and treated" loose stool. He also told me to raise my humidity to 80% and never recommended a probiotic. I got more helpful advice from this discussion forum and the research i did myself, and trusting him is what i believe ultimately killed my beloved little beardie. I don't want him killing other peoples pets. I don't think it's cool at all that this douche is aloud to get away with calling himself qualified to treat reptiles. I would like to do whatever i can to stop him and to warn people not to go there. Westover animal hospital in Chicopee, Ma. Dr. Constance.

Hello,

Unfortunately, a lot of times, vets do see reptiles, but so few of them that they really are not knowledgeable. I hate to hear that he was that ill informed on reptiles & attempted to treat your baby.
We are all here for you, if you need anything.

I am sorry for your loss. I know what you're going through, I had a very similar experience with a Leopard gecko a few years ago. The Vet was completely unqualified and killed my pet because she prescribed too heavy of a dose. Its a shame that you had to go through that and a bigger shame for your poor pet. Just know its not your fault, you were doing the right thing in getting him treatment.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
