Hi. Pico is an eight year old male. He has a tank that is four feet long, the floor is tiled, he has climbing branches, a hammock on the basking side as well as the cooler side, he has plenty of real rocks to bask, climb and lay on. He has a cave and hiding places behind the artificial vines hanging in his cage. We have the Repti-sun 10 hanging inside the cage and his basking side is usually in the 90's, he does not like it above 96 and will go down into his cave if it is. The cooler side is usually around 85 degrees. Pico will not eat crickets but he does love super worms and I use calcium powder with D in it on them. He will eat some peas and green beans and fruit, He refuses to eat any type of green unless I force it. I have tried every type of green the grocers sell (except of course lettuce). Once in a great while he will take a few bites because I put the worms in the salad.
He also has an outside cage for hot sunny days in the natural light. That is actually a large dog metal dog kennel that we carefully wrapped in chicken coop wire, put indoor outdoor carpet in and logs, rocks, fake vines etc. He loves to hang out in that cage on the deck and spends many hours out there since the weather has been very warm. Also, I let him out and walk around the yard with him as he is a mama's boy and I don't have to worry about him running off (I could of course never do this with my four month old dragon, Tango).
Pico was in to see the vet two weeks ago because he has not been eating much and he was throwing up clear, thick mucous. He seems dehydrated because every other day when he gets his bath, he starts gulping down water....lots of water! He has never done this before, just a few little sips during his bath. Then, after the bath, his beard blackens, he puffs up and starts vomiting. He tries to put his head up when the vomit comes but I lay him on my knee with an old towel on the floor below him and open his mouth to make it come out so he won't choke.
He is going through a very long shed right now and his color is very dark. Hi beard is not puffed out, but it is always dark now.
The vet did blood work a couple months ago when he wasn't eating and everything is good. I had taken in stool samples to both appointments and they were fine. This last time I took him in, he did and x-ray because he said that it was obvious from the tests and the pictures i showed him of his set-up that all the husbandry was excellent.
He put Pico on Metronidazole 25mg/ml suspension 1 time per day. The vomiting seemed to stop but now he has started again! The vet had told me that he wanted me to video tape him actually vomiting so he could see what was going on because all the tests just don't make sense. This vet is wonderful, has reptiles of his own and is very caring and thorough with Pico. As there is still quite a bit of the medication left in the bottle, I started giving it to him again yesterday and will be calling the vet tomorrow.
The vet had suggested it might be his kidneys shutting down!!! I pray to God it's not!!! If any of you have ANY advice, have been through this and know what I can and should be doing, PLEASE HELP ME!!!!! My little guy is so lethargic and just wants his mama to hold him. I feel so guilty going to work and scared of what I may find when I get home.....his stools are normal not runny and the white is bright white. I make sure he is either getting natural sun or the lights for 10-12 hours per day. He gets his liquid vitamins once a week.
