Recently I discovered a very small beardie at my work. It was in the "Wellness Room" due to having a very swollen and infected eye, and also being very small, dehydrated, and weak.
Our store vet, who by the way does not know much about reptiles and sometimes even has to "go home and look that up online and let us know later", has been treating the eye with medication twice a day. I do not know what the mdication is called right now, but can post the name later after I pick the beardie up.
A few days ago when I discovered this cutie, I noticed that he was getting worse and worse. I called the store manager and was very surprised when she agreed to let me take him home for the night so that I could soak him and give him repti-care, critical-care, vitamins, and give him some soaks throughout the night. I brought him home and placed him in a little container nice and close to a uvb since he had not had uvb on him for three days while he was in the wellness room!!! :angry5: :banghead:
After just a couple of hours of the above he quickly perked up and went from being non-responsive to being a perky and quite enteraining little guy.
I had to return him the next day, but later found out that the vet said there would be no way petco could sell him so my manager called me up and said if I wanted to take him he is mine! Of course I want to take him!! I gotta try and do what I can for the little guy and see that he at least has a shot at life!!

I am picking him up later today. I am going to take him to a reptile specialist in about a week.

P.S. After finding out that they were not keeping a uvb on the beardies that were in wellness for being ill :banghead: , which makes no sense to me since they need it to process calcium and other nutrients!! I gave my manager an extra fixture and uvb bulb that I had and told her she is to start using it in the wellness room - if not I would report this problem to anyone and everyone I could. Glad to say the beardies in wellness now receive proper uvb and are actually doing much better!! Now who woulda thunk it ya know??!!

Below you will find some pics I took of him while he stayed the night with me.... If you can help me out with anything else I could do to help this little guy, or you by chance have seen this before and know what may be wrong, please let me know!! The pics show his small size, how dehydrated he obviously is (but you can tell he gets better), bumps that were said to just be "growths" on his back, and then his poor infected little eye. I personally think that maybe he got scratched by another beardie and it just didn't get treated so it got really bad.

Goooodness. I wish I could help. He's worse off than anything I've seen myself. Is he eating alright? hunting crickets or babyfood?

I guess I might have posted this a little prematurelly. As I was getting ready to pick this little guy up today, my manager called me to let me know that she had this guy taken to a reptile specialist (the same one I was going to take him to). I was happy and worried at the same time that this came out of no where. I asked about what time he would be back at the store and decided to stop by to hear what happened.
In a way it is worse than previousy thought, but now he is getting the medication and care that is needed so that he can live a long life.

I wasn't able to bring him home, which of course makes me a bit sad. Yes, it is nice that my manager did this while still in their care - so they are paying for it. But, I worry about whether every manager giving the correct meds at the correct time, or even at all. So I got approval to come in and give the meds myself, even if I don't work :D

N-e-ways...
The bumps on his back and neck were absesses(sp?), or built up infectious junk! She removed those, cleaned up his eye, and supplied us with meds that would actually help. Although you could tell he was little poo'ed, but he looked so much better!!! :blob5: :blob8:

I couldn't believe the difference in what one vet said as apposed to the other. And to make matters more shocking, the specialist said that the medicine the 1rst vet gave to put on the eye should have NEVER been used on it!! :x :angry5:

He has an infection running through his whole body. It came from the absessed lumps that were on him. She said there is no way to tell how long he has had it, or where he got it from. Now he is on like three meds to get rid of the infection from the inside. She also said that there is still hope for his one eye though :D

Hopefully soon he will get better and I will be able to bring him home!!

I would still like to hear any suggestions you may have, or comments, or whatever =)

Please post a warning for other people coming in, that was some scary stuff that should never happen to a dragon.

Glad the reptile specialist got to him and he's got a good chance, any chance for updated pictures of how he is looking now?

I don't have any pics of him from today, no. Wasn't really thinking about taking a picture at the time I went to see him. I can take my camera with me when I go in tomorrow morning to give him his meds.

And, I'm sorry, but post a warning for who? People at the store? The beardie is not on the floor or anywhere near it. The people coming in here? No, don't think I will... I know people here are not fans of Petco in the first place, and I am not trying to brew up more hatred for them, but I doo hope that one day they will change their views on animal care and finally stick to what they say about animals coming first. People, be it those who come in here young and old, or those who work and/or go to Petco should read this so they can also have a voice that Petco one day change and not worry so much about how much it will cost be it this vet or that vet, but worry more about which one will give the best care.

Poor baby i hope he makes a full recovery and i'm glad too see the manger took some responability and got that dragon the medical attention it some rightfully deserves. I'm sorry you didn't get to take the dragon home with you. But at least you still get to see and medicate the poor baby, Maybe offer them so much money for him. Will you adopt the poor guy after all this?

Oooo... lol, sorry. Didn't even think about that. I guess I personally don't think they are, and with this being the health forum... I have seen worse than this.. oh well, sorry all.

Oh yes, I will be taking this little guy home as soon as he is able. I wanted to take him home today to be sure he is cared for the way he needs, but she couldn't let me, which I kinda understand.

Like I said before, even if it is to eventually find him a good home, I just want to be sure he is cared for. There are too many animals that come and go through our wellness area, and for some reason the reptiles are lost more than others.

As soon as I can bring him home I am going to!!

Well unfortunately the little guy passed last night in my hands as I was soaking him.
He was already so sick that even though at times he did better and may have made it, the slightest change sent him tumbling.
I do have pics of when he looked better, and I could go into detail about his passing and my trying to revive him, but I am not in the mood right now to explain. The only reason I may later is so that if/when this happens again, as I do work for Petco, and I bring another one home trying to save it, I will know (and others out there may know) what to do.

I thanks you all!!!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
