Acidophilus Made With Dairy

Hello,

I saw that someone posted a while ago about dairy not being harmful to beardies if it contains acidophilus. Is this true? The reason I ask is because Custard's vet just diagnosed him with worms and coccidia, which he is on panacur and albon for. The meds have diminished his appetite, so I bought liquid acidophilus for humans that is strawberry flavored from the Vitamin Shoppe, but it is made with nonfat milk. I couldn't find acidophiliz+ locally and did not want to wait for shipping. Do I need to order th acidophiliz+ online, or can I stick with the human formula?

Hello Jessica,

Sorry to hear you have to deal with parasites.
As far as I know dairy is still a no no for beardies. I don't think it containing acidophilus makes any difference.

If you can not find the acidophiliz+ you might try looking at the health food stores for some soy yogurt. Soy yogurt is a safe probiotic for beardies. I use this on occasion and mine even enjoy it.

Thanks for your answer. I'll go get the soy yogurt. Yeah, the parasites stink.

Also, I just gave him his medicine, which he does not enjoy at all. His beard puffed up and turned black, but half of his tail is still dark. I'm worried abut that part. He has been shedding on his tail. What does it mean? Is it just stress? How can I fix it? I hope it isn't too bad.

How is he doing now?

Was it dark before the med's just darker now? It's hard to say if it may be some shed coming on or if it might be stress.
If you want you could post a pic and we'd take a look for you???

I haven't found a beardie yet that like those nasty meds.

Keep an eye on the beard an you might place him on a warmed rice sock with a small towel placed over it to keep his belly warm. This will help the meds work and with the tummy ache.

Hi Barbara.

He is fine now. No more black tail, and the beard quickly went away after he calmed down. It was all dark after the meds.

What is a rice sock? I have been burritoing him in a soft washcloth at night, which he finally seems to enjoy .

Take a sock and fill it with rice and warm it up in the microwave. Like a heat pack. :wink:
I suggest to place a towel over it though as sometimes it's actually hotter than it may feel at first.

If you have a heating pad you could place it on low with a small towel over it and burrito him on that for awhile.
