Dragons like to taste test everything. They frequently eat inedible items like wood, buttons, jewelry, pebbles....etc.
So even if your not feeding him in the enclosure there is a risk using the chips. I only want what's best for your dragon. I understand it looks nice...but it isn't safe. Many others will tell you the same thing.

ok thank you for your help I will replace it with something that isn't loose until he grows. ill save loose substrates like sand for when I have to upgrade his enclosure. thank you again for your help, I have been reading this forum nonstop because I'm always afraid of doing something wrong without noticing.

Its totally understandable, lots to learn with the little critters. Its a never ending process, but an enjoyable one :)

If you do decide to ditch the chips you can always just use paper towels for now. It's cheap and works very well.

There are many different opinions about all loose substrates that is why I try not to get into that with people because it is debatable. There are risk, as others mentioned, associated with its use and it's best to know about these risks so that you can look out for any signs of illness. However, it is your right to use the substrate you believe is best for your dragon. I personally do not believe it's worth the risk but that is me. Some individuals wish to give their dragons a loose substrate so that they can dig and I completely understand this. You can always meet in the middle and add a "dig box" for your baby if you believe it would enrich his life.

Okay cool. I'm not one of those people that try's to force my opinions on others, it's so annoying lol. I know some people like loose substrates and that's their right. I was just making sure they weren't cedar chips. Cedar is known to be toxic ?☠️
But on another note, let us know if the humidity allows you to keep the water fall and how your baby likes it :)
Humidity looks good and he seems to like it but he definitely prefers to hang out with me while I do homework :study: I'm quite glad he's finally used to me and he's enjoying his Viv.

I found that Fred enjoys burrowing so I decided a carpet wouldn't be good for him, I bought his sand and feed him in a tank without substrate. I now that there is some risk but I'd rather him be happy, id feel bad if his home wasn't comfortable enough for him.

It's good that you feed off of them. That will minimize the chance of ingestion. I'm not going to force my opinion on you, but I like tiles.

I know someone who had a black throat monitor swallow a chip and get very sick. BTM's are big lizards. He had to get surgery.

Ultimately, It's your choice.

EDIT: Oops- I didn't read the second page. Sorry.

So glad to hear your girl is bonding well with you and things worked out with the waterfall. I'm also glad to hear you did decide to go with a different substrate. I think you'll find it sooo much easier to clean lol.

The same thing happened to me. I purchased a male dragon only to find out "he" was really a she a few weeks later. I wouldn't trade her for the world now she's an amazing little girl. And your girl is a cutie might I add :)

Your set up looks nice.
Your dragon does look a bit small, but I think it should be fine on sand. My rankins have been on it since they were a bit smaller. You can buy gold panning screens to sift the sand. It comes with 4 sizes of screens...or you can just use a sifting screen designed for kitchen use. I just saw some yesterday at Dollar Tree...so I bought 2.
Only problem I'm having with sand is digging up roaches that burrowed down into it. So even though I have been using sand for 25+ years, I'm probably going to switch to tile.

I know others may have their opinions, but I personally think he is too little to be on sand still. Plus, it is a pain to clean out and can harbor bacteria. I would use shelf liner, tile, carpet, SOMETHING ELSE. Just my two cents

Yeah, sand is one of those things that is pretty controversial.
Check this cute little rankins out. He's been on sand for about 3 months, all 4 of them are on sand.
It's funny he's nearly full grown, he won't get much bigger. He hasn't grown much in the last 2 months, so he may be full grown now :)

Thanks! They are neat little lizards. I know most of you know I don't really keep reptiles as pets, I'm more geared towards captive husbandry and propagation. But these little guys are so cute they are pets :)

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
