I guess this picture will pretty much explain it all. An owner of a bearded dragon thought it was alright to use a heat rock and this is what happened... I felt so sorry for the little guy

It just shows how a bearded dragon can get burned by a heat rock and why it's a bad idea to use one. Just wanted to share as a warning to those who think it's ok and want to give one a try.

Wow, poor baby :( Heat rocks really are dangerous. It's so frustrating that products like this are sold, and people who don't know any better end up with a horribly injured reptile.

:( Make sure to take care of that little one and put some burn stuff on it so it doesn't get infected.

The same thing happened to my iguana, the burn got infected even though I immensely cleaned it multiple times a day. These things are a disgrace.. They should not be allowed to be sold. :?

This is terrible. Poor bd, this needs to be a sticky so all people can see the danger of using one of those horrible heat rocks.

Could be good with an explanation why this happens too:

As far as I have heard, beardies do not generally feel heat from underneath, but only from above.
If you think of their natural habitat, there is no natural place where it would be actually steaming hot underneath while rather cool in the air, at the same time.

Sure, rocks keep some heat over a long period of time, but not throughout the night... Most beardies like some heat, partly because they do not produce heat themselves like us humans, and therefore, the heat generated in the surrounding air from heat rocks is pleasant. What they cannot feel is when it gets too hot underneath

Good thread!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
