5mth old M trying to dig

Hello Everyone,

New to the board and new to dragons here. We're not new to reps or herps but have a question concerning our little guy. We've had him for about 2wks now and are having alot of fun with him. Oh yeah, he's my husband's dragon..not mine..~wink wink~ :D His name is Beaureguard, hubby & son call him Beaugie my daughter & I call him Boga. "Confused One" will be used in a few months. *LOL*

He's on ceramic tile, yet has started digging at the small end of his cave where it joins the ground. He's only doing this at night and right before he lays down to sleep. He'll sleep either on his basking log or on the tile floor in the mouth of the cave.

What is everyone's opinion on at what age to give a sand area? I know it's not to be offered till he's older/longer, I just want to plan ahead. He's in a 29gal right now as we have yet to find a dresser to convert into his viv.

Thanks,
Heather

I have a 7 year old beardie who loves to dig in the sand. I am still unsure why, but he also does this at night. My guess is that he is trying to find a safe place to hide when they are sleeping, or they are trying to find a cool spot underneath something. Honestly if you do not already have sand for your beardie I would not get it when he is older because the sand can cause an impaction. The only reason why I have it for my beardie is because he has been on sand sense he was a baby. I hope this helps at least a little bit.

my 7 month old does the same thing so did my 3 yr old (R.I.P. FATBOY  )
I Think this is just something they do at bed time .like preparing their bed for sleep?
My dragons have always been on clay tile and that is all i plan to keep them on.
Don't want to take the risk of bacteria and parasites with loose substrate (but thats just me).
Even though he didn't get anywhere trying to dig a hole in the tile he finally gets
content with the job he thinks he done and fall right to sleep.
I have heard of many people having success on keeping their older dragons on
washed play sand with out any negative affects but tile is so much easier to clean
and no worries if i got it all clean or not.

Thanks for the input. :) We'll try a blankie first once we get the permanent viv set up. Hubby doesn't like to do alot of cleaning and with 4 humans 2 dogs 4 cats 8 birds and 1 dragon, plus caring for monkeys at work, I'm a little worn out for major sand cleanin. *LOL*

I would just put a blanket in at night and let him cozy himself in that.

I agree. My babies love to sleep in something soft.

Another alternative is finding a little ferret bed. I found one at PetSmart that looks like a mini doggie bed. My big boy curls right up in that thing.

I'll have to look for that! I found one that is meant for hamsters, but Lil is too big for it.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
