Thought I'd share this with you all!
First of all here's a little picture of my Gary that's recent because he's so darn cute
So, we just upgraded him to a 40 gallon tank the other day. We're planning on going even bigger, but it's not in the budget right now as my boyfriend just quit his job and is searching for a new one. But for now we will make it as comfortable for him as we can! (The 1$ per gallon sale at petco is a lifesaver btw.)
We started building a 3D background for him to climb around on! I didn't start taking pictures until we got halfway through and I realized that I should take some to show you guys
So we started out with a thin piece of wood (not too thin, so that it will stay straight even with weight on it). We cut the wood piece to the dimensions of the back of Gary's tank. We glued stacks of Styrofoam onto the wood piece with gorilla glue. Here's the first picture I took:
We had that water on top of it because we needed something heavy to hold down the pieces while the glue dried and it just happened to be sitting right there
I then started to carve out the shape we were wanting for him. I used a serrated knife to drag it all over the surface of the Styrofoam and create a rough rock-like texture. We also created a cave for Gary to crawl into when he wants to hide.
The cave goes into the ramp part of the piece so that Gary can hide his face, which he loves to do.
This is all we have so far. Next we are going to cover it in plaster of paris to give it even more of a rocky texture, and keep it safe from the heat. Then we're going to paint it with non-toxic paint! I will upload more pictures as we progress.
