2012 Incandecent Phaseout

"The phase-out of incandescent light is to begin with the 100-watt bulb in 2012 and end in 2014 with the 40-watt. All light bulbs must use 25 percent to 30 percent less 2014. By 2020, bulbs must be 70 percent more efficient than they are today. "

While I am a firm supporter of getting rid of incandecent bulbs from an environmentalist perspective, I was wonder how the phaseout will effect the reptile trade. Clearly there are other heat sources availbable other than incandecent bulbs, but so many keepers choose to go with cheap household incandecents for their heating needs. What do you guys think about this?

Since I currently do not keep any duirnal reptiles or any that require heat since I am only keeping a couple crested geckos currently, this wont really affect me but I know that this will affect many on the board here. Ideally I would like to see this push reptile supply companies into creating more affordable and more efficient Ceramic Heat Emitters (CHE's) and Radiant Heat Pannels, but I fear that more and more people will turn towards dangerous options like heat rocks. Now technically a halogen bulb is incandecent but I haven't seen whether or not they will be phased out as well.

If you hadn't heard about the ban of incandecents you may have noticed if you have purchased any new lighting lately. More and more the max wattages of light fixtures is dropping making incandecent bulbs inadequate and helping push people towards better and more efficient alternatives like Compact Flourecents and LED's.

"Many of these state efforts became moot when the federal government enacted the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 in December 2007, requiring all general-purpose light bulbs that produce 310–2600 lumens of light [27] be 30% more energy efficient (similar to current halogen lamps) than current incandescent bulbs by 2012 to 2014. The efficiency standards will start with 100-watt bulbs in January 2012 and end with 40-watt bulbs in January 2014."

Halgen answer solved. Sounds like Halogens are safe. Which is great since many of us use them. I always used halogens when I had Obie because they lasted longer and had better light quality.

I will more than likley move to a halagen system.
I have it worked down to a science with using bulbs for heat.
Any change in the weather and im able to adjust up or down in minutes.

I have a little stockpile going of different bulbs/ wattages/ styles. Over here in the UK the phaseout has already begun so incandescent bulbs are getting herder to find.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
