I had been using sand as a substrate since I got my beardie. He was in a sand substrate viv since he was a baby. Never had a impaction issue.
Anyways, I would use a shop vac to clean out his viv once a week (4'x2') and lately moving large rocks and tree branches has become quite the task.
I wanted to do a slate or ceramic tile floor but I am the type of person that has to fall in love with the product and colour before I buy so I was looking at shelf liners as a temporary fix. The shelf liners just looked tacky so I held off until something better caught my eye. Lizard carpet was a big no no. I thought sand was labour intensive, I could just imagine cleaning a carpet.
I did a floor in my basement kitchenette with the 12X12 vinyl tiles as a temporary fix until I got a good deal on some nice lino. Like I said, I have to be in love with the look before I commit. Needless to say, it's been 3 years and the tile has held up well. I had some tiles left over from that project so I decided to try it on the vivarium.
I used a vinyl tile that had a fake stone pattern and it has worked very well. The best part is you just need a pair of scissors or exacto knife to trim. The adhesive is already on the back of the tiles.
Since the viv is supposed to be a dry environment, I don't forsee any water issues that would cause the tile to lift.
I can also change it out quite easy if I spot a different pattern at very little cost. I think I paid 33 cents per tile and I only needed was 8 pieces. (Under $3.00)
I just thought I would share this idea with you.
Normally you can get the tiles at Home Depot or flooring companies; however, I picked up my deal at my local dollar store. Can you say BARGAIN
