    new enclosure lighting question

Cooper, I was going to mount the light inside the cage, since it's made of wood except for the front. Should I put some screen over the fixture then?

    new enclosure lighting question

Okay. One more question. Hiei loves to climb, I'm planning on building him a little climbing area on the cool side with lots of branches. Does it matter how close he gets to the light if I use the T5? I think his tallest branch is about a foot tall.

    new enclosure lighting question

I've built an enclosure for my beardie that's 4' x 2' x 2' roughly. The enclosure is made of wood with four 3" circle vents in the back and a long vent on each side. The one on the cool side is up high, the one in the hot side is down low. Everything is ready to go and now it's time to get...

    Blonde wood

I used blonde wood for the enclosure I built. I don't recommend it. Blonde wood is something like birch or pine that's been whitewashed to make it lighter. It doesn't hold stain well at all. All wood enclosures should be sealed, IMO. It helps protect the wood against moisture and staining.

    Indiana reptile stores?

Indiana is a huge state. I could recommend some but I'm in southern Indiana. Maybe give the part of Indiana or the nearest large city to you? That way you don't wind up with recommendations six or 8 hours away from you.

    starting to build a viv

I was planning on letting it cure on my back porch until it was finished. His current tank is a bit small, but I think it'll be okay until the bigger viv is ready. I have a picnic table I can set it on while it cures outside. I didn't know the sun would help it cure faster. I think I'll try to...

    starting to build a viv

I need to make it waterproof because sometimes Hiei has water in his poop if he eats a lot of hornworms or veggies and fruits with a lot of water. I didn't think polyacrylic was as water resistant as polyurethane.

    starting to build a viv

Well, I found out about curing. I'm hoping to start staining and painting this weekend, but I'm still not sure about the different types of polyurethane so if anyone knows, or can let me know the brand/type they used, that would be awesome. Before we start building I'm trying to get the vents...

    starting to build a viv

Finally starting to build a new viv for Hiei. I've never done this before, so forgive me if any of these questions seem stupid. We got blondewood made of birch for the walls. It was cabinet/bookcase quality and 1/2 in thick. The plan is to use a combo of screws and wood glue to keep it together...

    inheriting a crestie, care questions

A woman I work with is planning on moving to Hawaii in a few months and she has a crested gecko. Unfortunately, it's illegal to bring a crested gecko into Hawaii so she can't take her with her. She asked me if I would take her gecko when she moved because she knows how much I love reptiles and...

    questions on building a viv

What is bioactive? I've never heard of it before.

    questions on building a viv

The only problem with not grouting the tile is that when he gets hornworms and watermelon, two of his favorite treats, he winds up pooping out water with his poo. My mom is worried that this will cause the wood to smell. He's very good at pooping while we're at work so it may sit on the wood for...

    questions on building a viv

In the next couple weeks Hiei is getting his new, bigger enclosure. I'm pretty sure it's going to be made out of oak plywood and stained. For the substrate, I'm most likely going with a piece of linoleum or grouted tile. I have a few questions, though. First, I wanted to seal the inside roof...

    What about the outside?

For the inside I'm going to get my camera and take some pictures to make a background for him. What I need spruce up is the outside of the panels. The only pictures I can find of those are all plain white which my mom thinks would look bad in the living room. I was thinking tile myself or...

    What about the outside?

Hiei is going to get a new enclosure soon and my mom and I are trying to decide what type to get him. I'm very short, so I would prefer building a front opening one because it would be much easier on me to clean and get in. Mom wants to get an aquarium and try to find a low stand. The enclosure...

    the power went out

We had a huge storm last night that killed power to my house and half my neighborhood. The power company has no clue when they'll get it turned on again, and knowing them it could be days. So I need to figure out how to best care for Hiei with no lights or basking in his tank. I work today and...

    Bearded Not Pooping But Healthy?

You can try a warm bath or maybe some baby food apple sauce or prunes. Both of those can get the mail moving so to speak. If you give her a bath, you can also give her a gentle tummy rub.

    RANKINS DRAGON NOT GROWING

My guess would be that the smaller girl is very stressed and that's affecting her appetite. I know for beardies when they're under a lot of stress they can stop eating. Also hiding is a universal sign of stress for all reptiles. I would try separating them. If you can put the smaller girl in her...

    RANKINS DRAGON NOT GROWING

Are they housed together? I've heard rankins have similar behavior to beardies, so that could be the cause. When two beardies are housed together, they compete for resources and one doesn't thrive well a lot. That could be the case with your girls as well.

    swollen/peeling/covered nose on juvie

Those kits don't come with the right lighting for a beardie. You can use the basking light it came with, but you want to switch out the UV light for either a Reptisun 10.0 or an Arcadia 12.0 tube bulb. It needs to be the long tube not the compact coil. You can get the Reptisun from Petsmart...
