    Abnormal urate

Tonja, thank you for the reminder about the UVB lamp - his last bulb was the ReptiSun and I clearly purchased the wrong one in January. It will be replaced tomorrow after his vet appointment!! For clarification, kale is a "sub-green" (not his main diet, but included from time to time) I use to...

    Lip Tear or Shedding?

As another user pointed out it is listed in my emergency kit as a sterilization measure for the sink and tweezers/tools only. I specifically mentioned not using it directly on the animal. It is important to keep potentially infectious surfaces sterile when addressing medical emergencies. I also...

    Swollen limbs, I'm really worried.

I'm obviously not a doctor here, but that kind of edema may have several causes. A little bit of searching around the web and reading a few articles/book snippets indicated to me that reptiles that experience this have two main causes: hypovitaminosis A and renal (kidney) issues. Either issue is...

He's definitely a dude, with big ol' femoral pads, hemipenes, and everything~

    Lip Tear or Shedding?

My go-to emergency kit includes: - sterile gauze pads - cotton swabs - 1mL syringe - 3mL syringe - styptic powder - a popsicle stick - tweezers - sports/medical tape - hydrogen peroxide This covers most of my beardie's basic issues, such as stopping bleeding, gavage if necessary, etc. The...

    when the power goes out

I live in the northeast and have dealt with ice and cold related power failures a few times now. The best advice is to get a generator so you can still run the lamps, but let's face it, they're expensive for many of us to invest in for an event that may happen only once a year. If the power...

    Lip Tear or Shedding?

Looks like a shed to me, too :) Bones has knicked a scale before while exploring and there was blood so I feel like you would have seen that. If the site starts looking infected or if you see blood in that area, then I would be concerned. FYI if you haven't already bought some styptic powder, do...

    Abnormal urate

While giving Bones a bath today, I noticed an atypical urate. His fecal matter looked normal (green, squishy-solid, healthy, well-formed)... but the urate! The yellowish part is hard, but I can break it apart with my fingers. The white part feels normal in consistency. He had a little trouble...

Cat fleas and concave head scales

Thanks! I wasn't worried about him "getting" fleas, so much as having a living environment that contains them. When he was young, I missed a leftover cricket in his cage and I couldn't figure out what was irritating him until I found the cricket! I felt terribly!! I'm afraid I've always been...

Cat fleas and concave head scales

I'm having one helluva week, animal wise. Problem 1: Cat Fleas and Beardies I woke up this morning to a text from my friend saying she just figured out that her cat has fleas. A lot of them. I visited her house last night, and cannot get the image of her cat rolling on my coat out of my mind...

I would like some opinions on how to properly take care....

You can try - my beardie hates getting baths unless they're in the morning. If you do bathe him, be sure to use lukewarm water (test the water temp with your wrist like you would do for an infant) and make sure you only fill the bath basin just below his shoulders. :D

new to forum and bd's question about behavior and lighting

Just a couple things before I try to address the questions: 1) You'd mentioned replacing the UVB Zilla tube with a T8 daylight fish lamp. Healthy beardies need plenty of UVB to aid in their metabolism, so you're honestly probably better off sticking with a UVB tube (a lot of forum users will...

    Sleeping: how long? (not brumation.)

My beardie Bones is about 2 years old. My fiancee and I are his caretakers: we are both college students, him in undergrad, myself a grad student. Lately, due to summer classes, we have been keeping earlier schedules. I've been waking Bones up at 7am and leaving him a delicious, wormy salad...

    Coughing and biting tongue?

Yeah, poor guy was up until 1am coughing... he tried to sleep standing up, almost stretching his neck out. He finally laid down and got some good sleep after 1am. He woke up this morning around 8am and starting coughing almost within 10 minutes of being alert until 2pm today. I just got back...
