Health issues with my 5 year old girl

Postby Tfulton30 » Fri Nov 15, 2019 7:12 pm

Hi everyone. I’m wanting to get some feedback on some issues I’ve been having. Back in April my JM was having breathing issues. It went on for about 2 months. I took her to the vet and they initially thought she had a respiratory infection and put her on bay trail. I gave her an oral dose for 2 weeks and it didn’t do anything so they gave me the stuff to inject. Did that for awhile and it didn’t help. After everything it turned out she was laying eggs weeks later. I had to take her to the er a couple times cuz she was having trouble laying them. I must’ve taken her to the er 4 times for the egg issues. At one point they stitched her up cuz she had a slight prolapse in between all of this. After 6 months of no issues she started breathing heavily again last Saturday and we took her to the er on Tuesday. They did a CT scan and said they saw a growth but not sure what it is. They also said there was fluid in her. Not sure what is going on but want opinions. She has a 50 gallon take a 10.0 reptisun t5 tube light and a basking spot that’s usually about 93 degrees. I give her 20 percent crickets and the rest veggies. Collards, dandelions red leaf lettuce, carrots and also some blueberries and strawberries every now and then. I’m at a loss at this point and have spent thousands to make her better but feel that no one knows what really going on. Any advise would be great. Ps I’ve been instructed by the vet to Inject her with an anti inflammatory and an antibiotic. Meloxicam is the anti inflammatory but I can’t Remember the other one it’s much milder than bay trail. Doesn’t seem to have side effects,

Hello,

So sorry that JM has been having trouble!
Egg laying is so hard on them sometimes. So she does not have eggs again this time
based on the x-rays now?
I hate to even ask, but, did they do bloodwork at all, any of the times?
Your tank setup sounds fine. You might consider raising the basking spot to a bit higher
temperature. We usually recommend 95-105F with a cooler end of around 78-82. The
overall ambient temperature shouldn't really exceed 80 or so, just so she can properly
cool down when needed.
Have you had her tested for adenovirus at all? Is she a specialized morph, like a leatherback,
hypo, etc?
If you have any pictures of her, along with her tank setup that would be helpful.
Did they mention she had fluid in her abdomen correct?

Hi there,

I agree with Tracie, bumping up your temps at the basking site would be a good idea. Even if that is her preferred temperature, it's always best to have options for her to choose from that go a bit hotter. 93 is quite cool even for an adult.

If you could get back to us with what Tracie has asked that will help give us a lot more details :)

I do have a stronger bulb but it was getting up past 105 so I got nervous but if you think that’s best then I will change it. Is there something I can get to control the temps? I just don’t want it to get too hot. They did do some blood work and I was expecting a call yesterday and didn’t get it but I believe the last time this was happening there were some cell counts that were too high.I will have to call them on Monday. It seems like the vet doesn’t really know what is going on. She is a specialist and has a great reputation but since reptiles are more complicated than say a dog or cat it makes it harder to know exactly what’s happening. Can someone tell me how to post pics so I can show you her setup? She was breathing heavily on and off today but ate a little bit and her beard is normal. It’s just so bizarre. I just want her to get better but with this tumor or whatever it is in her and the fluid they saw I don’t think the outcome will be good. It breaks my heart.

Sorry no she is not a specialized morph or anything like that. I’m not sure if she was tested for that virus but I would think they did since she had so many issues in the past. How do they test for that? I know her poop has been tested for parasites.

Hi there,

105 at the basking site really isn't too hot especially if there are other spots to bask in that are sightly cooler (such as further down the log or rock etc.) and as long as it doesn't make your cool end temps too hot.

Thats great they did blood work. Try to get a copy of them (you paid for it after all) and post them up here for us if you can.
Many great animal vets really aren't trained properly or know much about exotics or dragons in particular. But luckily as dragons are getting more popular, it seems more vets are putting in a better effort to learning what they can about reptiles.

To post pics, you can upload them to the site here:
https://www.beardeddragon.org/useruploads/

From there, just copy and paste the XIMG code to your post, and it will post as your picture.

Thank you so much for your response. I will take some pics and post them tomorrow at some point since she is sleeping now and it’s dark in her cage. I will also call on Monday and ask for a copy of the blood work and post it. She is sleeping and seems content at the moment and breathing normally. I also used a dropper and gave her some water which she seemed to like. Little drops on her tongue. 😊

Hello,

We will look forward to seeing pictures of her & your tank setup when you can.
How is she doing today?
We can look over the bloodwork for you to be sure nothing was missed by the vet.
I'm glad that she took some water today, too.
Keep us posted on her.

She is doing ok today,Tracie thank you for asking. Doing the breathing thing but not as much as yesterday. I have to give her the antibiotic injection here soon. She ate some blueberries but doesn’t seem to care about her greens.
