I regret to inform you that my first beardie, Zeus, passed away earlier today. I buried him not too long ago. I'm prepared to start again with a new beardie, this time meeting all the requirements it will need. My first question is...

How do i ago about disinfecting the tank and everything else in it including reptile carpet.

Second question:

Is a 40 gallon long tank too big for a baby beardie? If so what size tank is appropriate for one? I have a smaller enclosure for it to feed, if that helps

Third:

I know this doesn't belong here but are there any breeders in the Dallas, Texas area i may be able to purchase a Beardie from?

My little guy seems to have no problem with his 40 gallon tank. In fact, he loves to dash back and forth after crickets, hence his name "Dash"

Why did the first one die? At the very least it may be worth replacing the carpet. The tank can be sanitized with a bleach solution, or I think an ammonia solution also. You need to rinse them very thoroughly, until all the smell is gone. You can also use steam, which is very effective and safe. You can pick up a shark steam cleaner pretty reasonably.

We honestly do not know why Zeus died. And that is great to hear, Steam will sanitize? Or is it only good for killing that one virus??

I think steam cleans/kills many viruses (but I could be wrong). Wonder if a mild bleach/water wash and then a steaming afterwards? I'd replace the carpet as well - maybe get non-adhesive shelf liner. It's cheap enough that you can toss it if need be.

Sorry to hear about Zeus.

As for cleaning the tank and any other items in it. Use a mixture of 10 to 1 Bleach solution. Clean everything then set the tank and items in plain water to make sure that all the bleach is out.

1 part bleach to 10 parts water (or the same ratio using vinegar) works and steam works.

Im not sure of any breeders in texas but many of us on here have babies available. thewolfmantom on here (tnddragons.com) has babies and I have babies. Im in louisiana and tom is in pennsylvania. Most breeders can ship nation wide.

Thank you all very much for your advice. I took a gallon of water and a 4th cup of bleach and sprayed everything with it. My only concern now is the log. I drenched it in bleach water and I've rinsed it a while lot of times and the smell doesn't seem to be going away. It's dampened but not gone. Right now it's submerged under water in my sink. What should I do if the smell isn't gone then? And does anyone have any tips for owning a baby? I bought Zeus when he was a juvenile and i doubt there are big differences but if there are any differences at all please let me know. Also how close does he have to be to the UVB light? I have a log that can take it to the very top of the cage where he's like 5" close (or closer) to the light.
