All cheaper non-contact thermometers are set to an given emissivity value , generally e = 0.9 or there abouts. This is OK for measure the temperature of enabled oven surfaces and bakeware. but not so flash for bits of bark, branches, bits of rock, bedding, and water.

There are tables of emissivities for different material surfaces available online, I personally refer to my Perry's Chem Engr's HB and my Furnace Engineering Reference books and my CRC HB of Physics & Chemistry.
This table is handy too https://www.omega.com/temperature/Z/pdf/z088-089.pdf
http://www.infrared-thermography.com/material-1.htm

To get the correct temperature when the emissivity is set poorly this is how you correct for the emissivity : https://www.apogeeinstruments.com/content/SI-emissivitycorrection.pdf,

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
