Alfalfa Pellets for a Digging Box? *Dig Box added... Pics!*

I've been wanting to give Dud a little digging box, because I think he has been getting bored lately. I hate sand, and after the eye problems I had with Wink, I refuse to put that stuff in his cage. So, I was thinking about alfalfa pellets. I was doing some research on it, and it looks like the biggest problem that people had with them is that they get moldy when they get wet. Dudley has a specific area of his viv that is used as a bathroom and I don't have any water in there, so mold really wouldn't be a problem. I would clean out his box and change the pellets weekly as well, if I tried using them. Fleet Farm sells massive bags of rabbit pellets for really cheap, so it would'nt cost much.
I don't see how impaction could be much of a risk either- It wouldn't be any different than eating beardie pellets, since alfalfa is digestable to them, and it is really high in calcium. Once I ate rabbit pellets (It was a dare, LOL... They are pretty nasty!) and they dissolve right away when they get wet.

Any opinions on it? They seem like a pretty good substrate for a digging box to me!

Biggest issue is molding. If you think you can control this, then you'll be fine. There would also be an issue if Duders takes to eating large quantities of the alfalfa, which could result in an imbalance or sorts. You might want to look at millet seed. Its commonly used as substrate for Uro's, and avoids many of the issues with other loose substrates.

Dud is a picky eater, so I don't think he would eat any. I would monitor him closely at first to make sure though, and I would take out the digging box if I was on vacation or gone for a day.
Where would you buy millet? Would it be sold with the bird stuff? I'll do some research on that in a sec. Would that be edible too?

So I googled it, and it looks neat. Apparently you can buy it in red colors too, so it actually looks like sand... Which would match the colors of Dudley's viv, LOL.
It looks like it is more expensive than alfalfa though, and some people said that it was edible, while others said that beardies can't digest seeds.

Dudley used to be housed on sand before I adopted him though, and there wasn't any evidence of him eating it when I adopted him, so I'm guessing he is smart enough not ot eat substrate if he managed to survive on sand. Have you ever used millet for your beardies?

The seeds won't be digested, but their shape allows them to easily pass through an adult beardies digestive tract. A "normal" beardie wouldn't eat to many of them...no flavor there. While not identical species, Uromastyx seem to do very well on millet seed. I wouldn't recommend a beardie have his entire enclosure covered in millet, but for a digging box, its probably the ideal substrate. No dust, reduced impaction risk for ADULT animals, and it looks "good". Zilla even makes a millet seed bedding...it can sometimes be found at stores like Petco and petsmart. You could of course use a bird seed mix that was mostly millet...some do, though note that other seeds may be included in the mix increasing the risk of digestive injury.

I've never personally used millet, or any other digging box substrate, with my beardies. Though I have thought about it for my female who has been known to scratch and dig at her tile.

OK, thanks, it does sound like a good idea. I'll probably do a little more research on the millet vs. alfalfa thing, and if the bags are returnable I'll buy one of each and see what works best. If I end up making a dig box, I'll post about it here. :D

I have located millet seed!
My mom said that she has millet seed bird food, and I just have to strain out the little sunflower seeds. Is that OK, or do I need the "special" reptile stuff?

Let me know how the millet seed goes.. Phred has his Yesterdays News cat litter dig box that he loves to lay in.. I change it out every 2 weeks or so. He was using it for his potty there for a bit, but now he's back to just his tub poo, and the occasional outside poo. I want to try the millet seed if it seems to work for you. Except he licks Everything, and with it being so small, I'm wondering if he would eat a mouthful.

Ok, I will! If the bird seed kind is OK to use, I'll make Dudley's dig box tomorrow. I felt really bad for him when he was trying to dig a bed in the corner of his viv today. He has a specific corner that he uses as a bed LOL, and when he is tired he shoves away the plant that I keep there, and shoves his face into the corner and falls asleep. So I think he will appreciate his digging box tomorrow!
Like I mentioned before, Dud lived on sand before I got him, and he ate on it and everything too (He didn't have a food dish). So I have faith that he won't eat this stuff.

Lots of people use that specific blend of millet bird seed for Uro's, and I've even seen them leave the sunflower seeds in
Personally, I would remove the sunflower seeds, but the millet in the mix should be fine to use. Let us know how it goes!

Ok, great!
I'm going to put it through a noodle strainer, and see if that gets the sunflower seeds out LOL. :D

Well, I ended up using the alfalfa pellets afterall. My mom's bird seed had crushed corn pieces and stuff in it too, so I didn't want to use it.
I think Dud appreoves of his alfalfa pellets though!!

I got him a different dish though, because he was kicking the pellets out EVERYWHERE.

And, it looks like I won't have to worry about impaction: Dud ate a pellet that rolled across the floor infront of him, and he promptly (and dramatically...) spit it out, and stared at it in disgust for a few seconds before walking away.

That last post made me chuckle =D Dudley seems like a cool dude. After reading this I think I might make mine a dig box too using the polystyrene method so I can give it little steps and stuff? My beardies are still small though so do you think it would be better if I used millet seed?

I just got Phred a new dig box today.. it was the insert to a cat litter box, so it's pretty big.. I filled it with the yesterdays news cat litter, and he loves it.. :D Another good Idea for a dig box, which Phred first had (until I saw this litter box thing today) is one of the aluminum cake pans (you get at Walmart) that have the alumnium bottom, then a plastic top. I used the cake pan part, and that worked really well.. except it was a little noisy when he was thrashing around :D

@Robin: Hehe, thanks!
I wanted to make Dudley's like that to match his basking platform, but I decided it would take too long to make LOL. But yeah, that would be a great idea.
How old are they? Personally, I would wait until they are at least juvies or sub-adults to give them a digging box, if they aren't already that old. But you could experiment with both, and see which one they like best.

@Laura: I tried a teeny tiny kitten litter box that I found, but the edges were a little high for Dud to climb over. A tin cake pan is a good idea too though. :D The new one I found for Dudley looks like it is supposed to be some kind of serving plate/bowl? I got it at a thrift store for $1 LOL. It has a funky shape, so I should get a pic of it soon!
