Hi there, I got my first dragon on December 30th. Her name is Ada and she is literally one of my favorite things in the world now. On January 5th she was about 6 and a half inches, and 9 grams. As of today she is 9 inches and 18 grams.

She is a bit of a weirdo, for example she is absolutely terrified of crickets. She won't touch them. I have tried live ones, dead ones, small ones, even smaller ones. Dusted and non dusted. Hand feeding, tong feeding, live release (where she can try to hunt them) both in her habitat and in a feeder tank. She just doesn't like them at all.

Then i wanted to try dubia roaches, but being in Ontario Canada, you cant get them. So she has been eating mealworms as her staple food. I just worry that she is not growing enough.

That being said I am no expert, so she might be growing just fine. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated!

I am not Canadian (Well, 1/4) or in Canada. That said, as I understand it, the law applies to "exotic" cockroaches; it does not apply to domestic cockroaches.
See: Direct from CFIA - Legality of Roaches and domestic canadian cockroaches

The first link also suggests that...
German/Russian Cockroaches (Blatella germanica) [are legal] in Canada, according to the CFIA site:
However the link to that CFIA site is broken.

I do not know the suitability of any of the legal species, or if/where they may be available, but hopefully this info may point you in a productive direction.

There are also many other insect feeders that are legal in Canada. insect feeders in canada

Good Luck, eh? :)

Hi there,

Mealworms are fine to feed, tons of people do and tons of breeders do. I too feed mealworms and have never had an issue.
See here for further reading if you're interested:

That being said, I also don't agree with only feeding 1 type of insect. So while you don't need to stop feeding mealworms, you should look into getting 1 or 2 more bugs in your arsenal that you can feed.

I would continue trying with the crickets. They are a good feeder. Were they just too big for her? Or did you put too many in front of her at once? Sometimes that can be overwhelming.

Other feeder options would be silkworms, BSFL, and butterworms to name a few.

All that being said, her growth looks fine to me :)

Is she eating her salads? That will help a lot too.

I feed worms--mealies, giant mealies, and supes--when the dubias haven't arrived yet (sometimes a week). I've not seen any problems except that they make his poop look different, but then they make my poop look different, too. Ba-dump-bump! :laughhard:

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
