The Life of Saphira! New viv pics!

I decided to make a topic about Saphira and her life as she grows up, and a place to put all the pictures i take!


First things first, i finally finished her permanent Viv! Was given somemoney for my birthday so i went shopping for some stuff to fill up the space.


Her viv is a 4'x2'x2', made out of melamine (got the plans from crossfiredragons).

Enough talk tho, heres the pics!

Heres the entire viv:

It has sliding glass doors, i personally hated trying to reach down into something.

On the left side i have a thermometer that measures her basking temp:

And on the right is the thermometer for the cool side:

On the hot side of the tank i have a little stick that leads to a stone structure thingy, which leads to her hammock, and her log is under that and has a blanket for her to sleep on:

In the middle i made a little rock wall that has a small cave in the center, got those from my garden and yes they were sterilized and baked in the oven, and then her veggie dish and water dish are in the middle as well:

Then on her coolside i have another little cave with some fake leaves around it, she seems to like to climb on the leaves lol, also i put a dragon statue in the other corner, i thought it looked cool lol.

So i woke up this morning to a strange scratching and rubbing noise in my room. i was drousy from going to bed too late last night and i peered around the corner at saphira saying "whats with all the noise im sleeping!" but within a second i see that she was shedding!!!! my attitude completely changed, i was no longer tired and had to grab the camera real quick. Heres the couple shots i have so far.


This is what i woke up too, it looks like shes wearing a little sweater lol!

Shes probally wonderin why the hell i keep taking pictures this early in the morning.

It only took her a couple minutes to get her body shed pretty much off, but she still has her entire tail to do

And finally i tried to get a close up of her colors:

unfortunatly with all the different types of lights in the cage its hard to get a good pic of her colors, ill try and bring her outside if its not too cold that way i can get the true colors in it. But she is a nice deep red with some light orange thrown around it!

Well im back off to bed, the initial excitement is wearing off and the long night is kicking in lol. more pictures to come when i wake up

heres a couple more pics, i was able to get saphira into some natural sunlight so the colors came out a little bit more.

and as you can see, her tail shed still hasnt come off, ill be giving her a bath later to help her through it

Her head is starting to go into shed next, im really excited for that because shes been getting some great oranges around her face, should be awesome after the shed!

So, yesturday was the first time i got truly upset with saphira, that morning i realised i was short on cash because of lack of work, well being responsible i went out and bought crickets. well she decided to be grumpy because her tail hadnt shed yet and decided not to eat at all, and the same thing that night, well now the crickets are dead....waste of my last $5, i was truly upset with her. its like having a kid, having to deal with their moods lol.

luckily she didnt waste the crickets i got her this morning. i wish they could give us a warning of when they arnt going to eat.

Those little poopers can be a pain. Do you normally order your crix in bulk online? That's what I suggest.

Try Ghanns or mulberry farms. premium crickets is iffy...

i usually just hit the local pet store every day, i havnt had time to go out and get an cage for crickets so i can order them in bulk. it is a hassel but sooner or later ill order them online.

you'll save a TON of money...

Get a big sterilite container and some egg crate. cut a hole in the top, put some metal (NOT fiberglass) mesh screen where you cut the hole and you have yourself a cricket carrier.

my local petstore charges .10$/cricket, making 100 crickets 10ish dollars. online i got 1000 crix for about 25 bucks coming to about .025$/cricket.

i'm just sayin, its a fifth of the price. go for it

No matter what, i can always count on my big girl to eat, and yes, i agree buying in bulk is a great idea, i do it to.

Well, i was watching tv and i noticed saphira doing her nightly laps around her viv before bed. she usually goes into her corner cave a couple times then comes out and laps around to the other end. this time however was a little bit different lol.

Here she is checking out the cave as usual:

but after a couple of minutes i noticed she wasnt in the cave any more, but she hadnt come out.....i wonder where she went lol.

Lol turns out i forgot there was another hole in the cave that was in the back, she somehow managed to squeeze through that hole and climbed up the back of the plant lol!

Then she decided to do it again, but got up higher this time!

I was wondering why the leaves were all bent over when i got home today, i geuss now i know the reason lol, she found a new climbing spot!

So this morning was an exciting one for me. Ever since i got saphira, i have been feeding her in a seperate enclosure. and everytime i go to feed her i show her the bag of crickets until she runs up to the glass to get out. Well so far she would scurry away when i open the cage to get her out. but today i showed her the crickets, then i decided to just put my hand in. And guess what! she walked onto my palm and waited for me to carry her to the feeding spot! i was so excited that shes starting to get used to me taking her out of the cage! Im definetly going to try this again at dinner time just to see if shell do it again lol!

That is sooooo awsome! My big big girl really isint that frisky. My baby on the other hand, she will scurry away.
