(This is Myah :love5: )
Myah developed coccidia. I'm unsure of the source but I'm betting crickets or house flies are to blame. If a reptile vet found it, then he should be able to cure it. Right...? Nope! Not even close! Myah went through two rounds of a very harsh med called Sulfa/Trim. Each fecal came back positive with a "heavy concentration" I didn't understand it. I was cleaning like mad! I followed every direction! Why does she still have this!? I was angry and sad all at the same time. Thank goodness for Bearded Dragon.org! It was this site alone that taught me that the bleach (that the vet said was great for sterilizing) was completely ineffective for coccidia. I learned that the meds I was given were not specific to coccidia and were one of the harshest you can give as it's SULFER based! My research lead me to the The bearded dragon co. which lead me to Toltrazuril (med) and their professional cleaner that KILLS coccidia! I once again cleaned and sterilized like mad! I followed the directions, waited the recommended time frame and handed my vet the sample. Negative! She went from an extremely high concentration down to zero seen!
Without this site, Myah would have continued the cycle of being sick, getting meds, not eating because of the meds, getting weaker from not eating then starting all over again until, well, I don't want to think about "Until"
Coccidia is very normal for bearded dragons, small amounts are nothing to worry about and all BD's should get regular check ups from a qualified vet. It's the massive quantities of coccidia that can be fatal if left untreated or treated poorly. BD.org may have honestly saved Myah's life thanks to all the wonderful people here who contribute their knowledge and time.
My little girl is healthy now, there really aren't enough "thank you's" in the world to describe how grateful I am to this site and all of it's kind members.
