So i have a big of a story, i have my adult male central bearded dragon (tofu is his name), he's always been energetic and runs around the house and runs around outside when he goes to poop and will always be happy in his tank.
two months ago i was gifted another bearded dragon, this one was a pygmy (dwarf, his name was Herm) since i live in australia its so god damn hot i didn't need a heating supply or anything, when i wake up my tofu will go upstairs and sit in the sun and he will run around and ill feed him his food, and ill put herm in his tank with the UVB on so he is getting his light, i will also take herm into the backyard and get sun but when im working he will be in tofus tank under the light and tofu will be upstairs, recently its been getting pretty cold at night and, so i ordered a heat lamp online and i was waiting for it to come, and i didn't want herm to get cold and get respiratory, so i put a really sturdy divider in tofus tank and put herm in there with him, neither of them could see each other or anything so they were both happily living in the one tank, the tank is also really big so herm and tofu had heaps of room on their own side.
when i work late shifts my mum will put tofu in the tank before she goes to bed and puts the divider up so they can't attack each other.
unfortunately i came home on saturday night after work, and i saw that the divider wasn't up right, herm was on tofus side of the tank... its sad to say that tofu had attacked herm and herm had passed away, he had some pretty significant injuries, one side of his little head was crushed, so his skull was sunken in, there was a fair amount of blood coming out of his mouth and there was bite marks up his tail
before any of you complain saying it was bound to happen and that i should have never done that, i was trying to look after both of my lizards, every time i put the divider up it never fell down and both of them were completely fine, it was just a one off incident.
now tofu is acting different, when he is upstairs in the sun he will run around and eat, he loves his baths and loves to go outside, but when he's in his tank he looks really sad, its a significant change from how he use to be, before herm died, he doesn't move much in his tank and doesn't really eat in his tank either he will just sit under the heat, he won't open his eyes fully but he will just kind of lay there moping. it can't be because he used all his energy through the day because he use to be fine in his tank after a day out playing.
he has all the correct heating and gets fed perfectly, im just wondering is he depressed? is it because of the incident or does he know that im upset as well? i cried for so long when i found herm.
also i don't blame tofu for what he did, its a bearded dragons natural instinct, they do it in the wild, i get it. :?
