Dry chalky poo or urate means he's not getting enough and can back him up and stress his kidneys. Letting a couple BSFL crawl around might entice him to hunt them while you watch. They are slow enough you can wait a while for them to catch his attention without dissappearing somewhere. Working up to handfeeding is a good way to get him comfortable around you.
