Head bobbing and black beard while roaming

Since Loki is the first beardie I've ever known, I'm still figuring out his body language. The last few days I've noticed when he's out and about, roaming the house (which he seems to love), he has started getting black beard and head bobbing at nothing. Is this a territorial thing? It seems...

Will he go back to eating dubias?

I got a batch of dubias last week to see if Loki likes them, so I could decide whether to get a colony established. Well, he ate them like a champ the first day, just a few the next day, and now he's either ignoring or just half-heartedly licking them. He ate just salad yesterday, and I offered...

What do you love most about your beardies?

This is a "just for fun" topic. :) I have only had Loki for less than 3 weeks but I think my favorite thing so far is how he snuggles in and goes to sleep on my chest every night. He already seems to expect it - the first few nights he put himself to bed but since then he seems to wait for me...

Need to replace my UVB fixture

So, the UVB fixture (a T8) that I got with my Loki's setup (off Craigslist) is homemade and I am not sure about the quality of the light even though I am using the correct bulb, plus I'm afraid it's going to poop out any minute since you have to wiggle wires to make it work. Probably not too...

Questions about setting up dubia colony

Loki had his first dubias today and he nommed them very happily, so I'm going to try to get a colony going now. :blob5: I have a Rubbermaid tub that I believe is a 14-gallon that I'm planning to use. What size heating mat would I use to get the right temps? I'm planning to use a tip I saw in...

How often to feed 9-10 month old?

I've been offering greens/veggies "free choice" (which means they sit there all day gradually getting crispy, since Loki mostly ignores them) and giving feeder insects once or twice a day, generally as much as he seems interested in. Does that seem about right for his age? He is about 18 inches...

    No external ears, but...

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed they can flare out their skin a little bit behind the ear openings, as if they are pricking their ears! I imagine it has the same purpose. It's really cute, too. :D

    Loki being a dork

I cracked up when I came in and saw Loki like this!

    Another poo question

Everyone's favorite, right? So since I got him on Monday afternoon, Loki has pooped twice, once on Tuesday and once today. Both times there was a small amount of urate with a brownish chunk attached to it, and a larger greenish poo with liquid. Today the poo definitely had undigested phoenix...

    Loki loves to roam!

So Loki, 9 months old, just joined our household two days ago and we're already in love with him! Here he is the day he got here: And here he is after falling asleep on my chest snuggled in his towel: He is still a bit nervous I think, but I'm hoping the next week or two will see him relax...

    Interesting info about morphs, etc.

I was confused about morphs and such and I found this page that seems to do a good job explaining them. Thought some of the other newbies might enjoy. :) http://www.thebeardeddragon.org/types-of-bearded-dragons.php

    Introducing Loki! *new pic*

Photo at the bottom, though not a very good one. I'll try and post a better one later, I just didn't want to bother him too much right now. He had a 45-minute car ride from his old home to this one. I've got him in a 40-gal breeder tank with a T8 Reptisun 10.0 tube and a basking bulb of unknown...

    Keeping dubias for feeding

I'm not ready to tackle starting my own dubia colony yet, but had a question about keeping them for feeding. With my son's frogs we just put crickets in a cricket keeper (with the tubes) with gut loader food and calcium-fortified water gel. Will this setup work for dubias as well, just to keep...

    What disinfectant do you use?

I was thinking of buying a steam cleaner, but I read that it takes 10-15 minutes of steaming to actually disinfect, and to do that to a whole tank would take forever. I'm wondering about products like the Zoo Med disinfectant...

    What about calcium spray?

Just curious because it seems like it might be more convenient to spray crickets than to dust them, but I haven't seen anyone recommend the spray in the short time I've been avidly haunting this board. :) Is there a reason more people don't use it?

    Quick question re: UVB tube

I'm not mechanically inclined, so I'm a little confused by it all. I'm getting a setup with a 40-gal breeder tank with a T8 fixture and Reptisun 10.0 tube. Do I need to find a way to mount it inside the tank or will it be okay to put it on top of the screen?

    Transporting and setting up

I'm hoping to get my dragon in the next week or so, but I realized I'm not sure how to get him home. How do I transport him to minimize stress (about a 45 minute drive)? And what do I do with him while I'm getting his cage set up? I may be getting a 9 month old or it may be an adult.

    Advice for buying adult beardie

There are several available on Craigslist locally for a lot less than making my own setup from scratch. I'm also nervous about starting with a baby so I like the idea of getting one already grown up so to speak. What should I look for and what questions should I ask?

    Advice on feeding young beardie

I haven't got my beardie yet, just doing research and saving my money for now. I'm wondering what would be the best setup for a young 'un (6"-7"). I see they can eat a LOT of insects until they are well grown. Do most people go with crickets? If I set up to breed my own bugs, is it okay to feed...

    Starting from scratch

Hi, I'm Lori, 41yo mom in Chapel Hill, NC. I've been wanting a beardie for the longest time and I've finally decided I'm gonna do it as soon as I can scrape up enough money. So glad to have found this site, the articles are fantastic and I already feel a lot more in the know than I did this...
