    New beardie "townhouse"

The vents are on the back wall of the top and bottom sections. The middle one doesn't need vents as rhe glass is only about half way on front. Misting would add too much humidity and the "pool" areas add just the right amount.

    New beardie "townhouse"

Thanks! I am still in search for something to occupy the top unit. Any ideas? The wife was thinking something other than a beardie. . .

    Finally finished

He is a link to the book: http://www.amazon.com/Sulcatas-Tortoises-Captivity-Professional-Breeders/dp/0976733420 It is one of the best books from what I have been told! Alot of good info. Nick

    UVB

Not enough UVB. Spend the money and get the 10.0 or just go with the MVB (Mercury Vapor Bulb) that are available. Not to sound rude (I really am not) but if you are asking this question, you need to read more about the care of the species. There is ALOT of info here and always ALOT more to learn.

    Finally finished

Good looking enclosure. I have a Sulcata (a.k.a. African Spurred Tortoise) and they are pretty cool, but they are the third largest tortoise in the world and do not hibernate, so you need to start planning for an outdoor heated shed for it live in in the winter months. I thought I would be ok...

    Safe woods to use

As long as you paint and seal (or stain and seal) you can use pretty much any wood. You really should seal it anyway to keep "things" from multiplying in them, makes for easier disinfecting. Nick

    Phoenix worms

They will do that if they have a steady supply of water and are actually "over" hydrated. They will do this as a natural way of cleaning themselves out, from what I have read. Just keep an eye on it and it should return to normal after a couple of days without the supers. Mine will do this...

    Phoenix worms

I see you may have put this some where else, but too many superworms can cause a slight impaction. Just put him in a bath and make sure the temps are right, nothing really to worry about. That's why I don't feed too many at a time. Nick

    Vinyl Tiles

What you smell is the phermaldehide (sp?) that all plastics/vinyls outgas from manufacturing. It eventually fades away, some are just stronger than others. Very, very rare cases can cause a "poisening" which just means you are more sensitive. I'm sure your fine. I would like to know what...

    mvb question

You may want to read the this reguarding how much a screen will cut down the UVB: http://www.uvguide.co.uk/mercvapourmeshtests.htm It's more like 20-30% depending on the mesh. Screen would probrably block more.

    Coralife power center power strip?

All I have found have a max of 4 outlets controlled by the timer. ACE hardware has one available for about $20. Nick

    Vinyl Tiles

Those are cool looking! I would kind of "bake" them under the lamp for a while give a wiff and if you don't smell anything, go for it. If you do, maybe do this longer and then give another wiff say in a day. . . Nick

loving beardie seriously turned against me! Need some advice

I would say that after reading the post, it was simply saying that he had already tried the "put your hand flat under. . " and it didn't work, got anything else I can try. . . Most of us make a post AFTER we try all the conventional things for what ever we are trying to do. Granted, some just...

    Phoenix worms

You don't need to put that many in there. What color is your feeding dish? Is it the same color as the worms or close? Put like 15-20 in the bowl and see what happens. I use a white dish when I feed them, then once he sees them, he can't get enough! Nick

    Unethical?

You have to ask yourself why you want to breed Beardies. Is it for the money, is it so that you can do research on the species, is it so that you can see what color morphs you can come up with? You really have to figure out why you want to do it, and then decide if the reason is unethical...

Help - My new viv is an oven.....

I plan to add one before the hot weather sets back in because of how warm the house can get sometimes. I will make mine "suck" the air out of the enclosure, that will draw cooler air in throught the openings in the front and from the vents in the back. If I put them to "blow" air in, it will...

Help - My new viv is an oven.....

No I don't. The SB's I have seen are 100W and 160W or I think the Powersun is available in 150W. Megaray is the only one I have seen in the EB, which is 60W.

Help - My new viv is an oven.....

The 60W from Megaray is an EB and will put out less heat. Maybe lower the basking spot down to were it was. The other thing is what substrate are you using, more specifically what color. Out of curiousity I checked my tortoise "cage" which is open in the front, so venting issues there, and it...

Help - My new viv is an oven.....

I run my MVB without the dome fixture. It would tend to focus too much. Also, I use the flood version versus the spot version. How are the temps in the rest of the viv?
