I use it wit a red heat bulb and it works perfect but you are correct on it not be ideal. A ceramic heat bulb would be better.

I picked up this one a couple of weeks ago and it works great. PLUS AT A GREAT PRICE. I use it to keep my roaches at the right temperature...

CD It should be a pretty simple process. (Key word "should") I'm going to put everything together this coming weekend. I'm going to do a picture tutorial on my process. I'm working on track lighting for the spot/heat bulb so I can adjust the lighting without having extra fixtures.
