    gonna barf, ew

I took Porter to my daughter's girl scout meeting the other night for pet night. I also took some roaches. Surprisingly, many of the second grade girls wanted to touch the roaches! So did Porter!

Well, if you weren't already grossed out by the roaches I'd say to pull off the wings (males) and cut them in half! ...But it doesn't sound like that's an option for you! I actually LIKE the roaches. They're kind of like another pet for me... well, a pet that I feed to a pet.

    Bearded dragon bite infection

If you had salmonella you'd know it! What you do have is an infection. I would get to the doctor sooner than later. Antibiotics are what you need. If the wound is swollen and hot and your glands are swelling it's too late to clean it and forget it.

Is paper towel really a safe substrate?

Porter has eaten a little chunk of paper towel several times - never seems to have any effect on him. I did start removing it during feeding though.

    Between the Eyes

Sorry if this is repetitive, but I tried searching and can't find a specific answer. How long does the "space between the eyes" rule apply? Is there an age when they can just eat whatever they feel like chasing? I ask because I see the local pet shop owner feed his adult beardies adult roaches...

    Asexual Crickets

Now those are awesome. I love growing my colony. Dubias breed kind of slowly, so it's real exciting when you find the first babies! The babies are cute - at least in comparison to their mom and dad!

    Asexual Crickets

You know, I don't find them all that bad. Maybe I'm a pig. 8) My wife can smell them 10 feet away, but I don't think they're super offensive. And I only have to clean the tub out about once a week (at least that's all the more often I do!) I just enjoy learning about all this stuff. It's like...

Heating feeders that are kept outside.

I think the goal is to keep them outside. Perhaps they're not permitted in the house. My wife wishes I could keep my bugs outside, but she is very gracious in letting me keep them indoors. Everyone thinks I'm a little off my rocker for raising bugs, but I gotta tell you, sometimes at night I...

    Asexual Crickets

OK, I added a 65watt flood light to the bin for a little heat. WOW! I see what people are talking about when they say crickets are noisy. They never made too much sound before, but now that they are all warm they are really chirpin'! I also see eggs in the eco-earth already. Amazing.

Heating feeders that are kept outside.

Make up some water crystals, put them in ziplock bags, and microwave them. Put them around the tub of worms in a cooler. That should keep you going over night pretty easily. I find that water crystals stay warm (or frozen) longer than straight water does, but in a pinch you could probably use...

    Asexual Crickets

My wife will be the first to tell you that yes, there are adults in the batch! :D I think the issue is temperature. I had read once that crickets will last longer at room temp than if you keep them warmer. Apparently that is not good for breeding. Thanks for the info!

    Asexual Crickets

OK, what gives here? I bought some crix to feed while my dubia colony grows. I figure I'll raise both crickets and roaches; I like more than one kind of meat, maybe Porter does too! Well, I set up the crickets with some eco-earth in a container to lay eggs in as outlined here...

    Sterile Crickets???

I just contacted an on-line feeder breeder :) I asked if his crix were sterile. He said his weren't and neither were the ones at the store! So maybe that was just an attempt to keep me from breeding them myself. Seems silly to lie about it. Honestly, what is the percentage of people out there...

    Sterile Crickets???

I'm in the local pet store buying some crickets to get Porter by until the dubias start to breed up a bit. I figured I'd buy a few bigger crickets and get them breeding. While talking to the clerk, I asked if she could tell the males from the females. She said,"No, but it doesn't really matter...
