Hi Guys,
I am wondering if there is anyone on here that has had success with using a nebulizer to treat a URI? My bearded dragon has been on 3 different antibiotics with some improvements. However, this infection is persistent and stubborn. There seem to be a few different things that can be added into the nebulizer for treatment. What are your thoughts?
Thanks

Hello,

I highly recommend using a nebulizer if your dragon has a stubborn or persistent respiratory
issue. It is very effective for treatments. I have used one for treatments in the past.
Do you already have a nebulizer to use?
Which medication would you use for the treatments?

I am unsure of what nebulizer and medication to use. I am mainly looking for guidance on which medication has worked well for others with respiratory issues. Also, where would I purchase these medications? Are there any particular features on the nebulizer that I should seek or are they all the same?
Thanks

Hello,

Most nebulizers are about the same. Some are larger than others, but all will have the
compressor & medicine cup included along with a tube of some type. Most don't have
a nebulizing tank so you can rig one up, to place your dragon in, for treatment.
Baytril, Gentamicin, Amikacin, & Ceftz are all commonly used agents for nebulizing.
Baytril is available without prescription but I would need to check on the others for you.

Let us know how your dragon is doing.

I just received my nebulizer in the mail yesterday. Going to get the treatment tank setup ASAP. What should the concentration be for dosing? I do have some leftover oral baytril at 100 mg/ml that I can use some of. Also, where would I buy more Baytril?
Thanks!

Hello Josh,

That is a good concentration to use. You can use 10mg per 1ml of water. How big of a
medicine cup is with it? You can plan on doing a 10-15 minute treatment, too.
I can send you a link to purchase baytril, if you would like. It is actually my online reptile
supply site, too.
Post some pictures up when you have the nebulizer tank all setup.

Hi Tracie,
The medicine cup that was included holds 6cc of fluid. I read that the Baytril should be mixed with distilled water as well? After nebulizing for 10-15 minutes is there anything else that I have to do to him or just put him back in his enclosure? Also if you have the link to the site to purchase Baytril that would be great! My nebulizing tank will be setup similar to the one attached in the link below.
Thanks!

Hello,

Yes, since you have a 6 ml medicine cup, you can use distilled water or sterile saline
solution to dilute it so it will last for the nebulizing duration. Just let him sit in there for
a few extra minutes once the treatment is done, so the rest of the "fog" will infiltrate
him. Then you can just put him back home for awhile.
That setup will be perfectly fine!
Here is a link for the baytril, too for you:

This page has all medications, but it's easy to navigate to find the bottle of baytril.

Hope everything is going well for him.

Should I be buying the 10% solution for the Baytril?

Hello,

Yes, a 10% Baytril solution would be easier to use for the nebulizing.
How is he doing today? I hope he is eating some for you. Is his weight stable right now?

Update: I ended up bringing him to the ER a week ago. He saw a specialist while he was there. They did xrays and bloodwork. The xrays showed a dark region in his lungs which they said was the fluid. They did say that he does not have pneumonia. The bloodwork came back normal. They said that his kidney levels were slighly elevated so I was instructed to give him 10-20 minutes bath 2 times per day. They put him on ceftazidime 100mg/mL given every 3 days in the front arm (alternating). I have been nebulizing him with Baytril for 15 minutes everyday (started 8/12). Not sure if I should stop that since it has been almost 2 weeks or continue? The poor thing keeps his eyes closed all day (the vet claimed that was likely because of the URI). I was also wondering if the baytril could make his eyes sticky since the medicine itself is quite viscous? I have been force feeding him 3 times per day with fluker's reptiboost and oxbow critical care. I have been very careful with how much I give him due to the fluid in his lungs. I am going to start weighing him every week and tracking his weight.Overall he is looking very skinny and bony and it breaks my heart to see :(. Not sure if there is anything else that I could/should be doing with this whole thing? Please let me know.
Thanks!

Hello,

So sorry he is having such a hard time!
The vet had him on Ceftz, is he off of that?
Are you also giving him a probiotic too? Maybe for now, stop the meds & nebulizing just to give
him a break.
How much of the baytril are you putting into the medication cup? It is a syrup but you can dilute
it though. He may just need a break from meds. Is he interesting at all in food?
At least the x-rays showed he did not have pneumonia. How long has he been having respiratory
issues now?

Let us know how he is doing.

He went to a different ER this time but they put him on the same antibiotic but a slightly stronger dose. I was putting 5cc of distilled water and 0.05cc of Baytril. I found this was enough to last 15 minutes of nebulizing. He has been having respiratory issues for about 6 months now. I gave him a bath today and really saturated his eyes with warm water to try and get them open. He finally opened them up and ran around my kitchen for a little while. I stuck him in front of my storm door and he sat in the sun for about an hour. Today was a huge milestone. This is the most energetic I’ve seen him in 2 weeks! I have not been giving him a probiotic, just reptiboost. What should I be giving him for a probiotic?

Hello,

Oh ok, which medication did the vet give, Ceftz?
That is a good mix of the baytril & distilled water so I don't think that was causing any
issues with it being sticky. Mixing it with the water will water that down.
I am glad to hear he moved around some today & enjoyed sitting in the sun, too. That
is definitely progress for him!
You can give a non dairy acidophiliz or a non dairy soy yogurt.
Keep us posted on him!

Yes, they put him on Ceftazidime. Would something like this work for a probiotic? Also,
should I feed both the reptiboost and the probiotic?
Thanks

What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
Taking my beardie for a walk
