Humidity?

Postby cas51 » Sat Jul 11, 2020 7:19 am

I can't seem to find a recommendation for humidity for ideal care. We have a very humid summer here, and I know that beardies are desert lizards, so a lower humidity is best. I've removed the water bowl from the tank, but even so the humidity levels are at 50%, sometimes higher. A second heat lamp will bring the levels down, but I am concerned about heat levels getting too high in that scenario. Alex has been eating much less, and spending most of the time in the hide on the cool side of the cage. I haven't seen him basking since May. I know he will eat less as he approaches adult size, (bought him in february as a baby), but I want to be sure we aren't missing something. He is only coming out of his hide now when we remove him to put him near his fresh salad in the morning, and when we offer insects. It doesn't seem like he would be trying to enter brumation, as the temps are warmer in his tank due to ambient temps being warmer. I've even opened the tank and run a fan to lower his temps on occasion, thinking if he's hiding on the cool side all day, he may actually be too warm. Thoughts? Thanks in advance for any advice you may have

If it is too hot for his liking, it's a natural response to hide to escape the heat, just as they would do in the wild.

What are your temps now? basking and cool side temps?

As far as humidity goes, 50 isn't bad really. And, most hygrometers are very inaccurate, you will want to do a calibration test on it first before relying on it for readings.

His tank is at 92 on the hot side, and 88 on the cool side right now. Today he is choosing to be out and basking on the cool side. When the hot side approaches 100, he will always hide. So I've set the heat lamp to turn on and off through the day to keep it in the 90s, since that seems to be his comfort level.
He is 15" now, so I think its time to start looking for a larger tank. He's in a 40 gal now.

If 88 is the coolest he is allowed to get in his tank, he most likely is overheating and trying to hide from the temperatures.

If getting him a bigger tank allows for a better gradient of cooler temps on the cool side, that's good. But it sounds like you might just need to keep fans on the tank to keep the cool end at least under 85. Preferably in a bigger tank I'd like to see under 80 for the cool end.
