Hello, so I’m a brand new Beardie mom and feel like I must be doing something horribly wrong.
Some info about my setup. I have a 40 gallon breeder lined with non adhesive shelf liner and repticaret. I’ve been using a mercury vapor bulb that kept the basking area at about 103 degrees. The cool side was 80.
So just 4 days ago I purchased an adult Beardie from my county reptile store who are known for being reputable. He was taken in from a previous owner so not much is known about him. He’s maybe a year old and just began shedding.
Friday April 19, I brought him home and he was super curious. I fed him superworms and some kale, he had a good appetite. Saturday he rose with the basking lamp, but I noticed about midday, his left eye was frequently closing. But he was still active and inquisitive. I took him outside to explore the yard, which he seemed to enjoy and both eyes were mostly opened. But when he used the bathroom, it was very loose and runny.
Sunday, his energy began to wane. Now both his eyes were closing but he always had energy to chase worms and eat. I took him outside again and he perked up, but eventually grew tired and rest with his eyes closed.
Yesterday, Monday 22nd he hardly moved at all and had another runny stool. He’s still shedding a lot, his belly, sides, face and legs. But when offered food, he would still eat but then quickly close his eyes. Now today, he refuses to eat, hardly moved at all and rarely opens his eyes longer than a few seconds. Even when I took him outside, he seemed rather indifferent.
I’ve been giving him lukewarm baths for his shedding. In the evenings he goes to bed right before the sun goes down and tries to dig himself a hide. I’m trying to set up an appointment with the local reptile vet.
