When to start a dubia colony

So I'm still in the process of working out if I'm going to get a beardie. From what I've been reading it seems like it's inevitable that I'll have to start a feeder colony. Dubia seem like a good option. The breeder I'm looking at sells their beardies at 8-10 weeks, my worry would be getting a dubia colony started before I get the baby and having way too many roaches.

I'm trying to figure out timing wise when starting a colony would make sense.

I would start at least a few months in advance. It depends a bit on how many you start with. I started mine with about 600 mixed sizes a year ago and they were reasonably established by February. If you start with more or have some adults they will likely start to breed into the next generation more quickly.

Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
