Attempt at a colony

So on the 28th of September I attempted to start my own super worm colony.
Now, exactly 10 days later, guess what??
WE'VE GOT PUPAE!! (thanks to a couple people who helped me out a lot!! :))

There's only two so far, but I'm guessing the others will turn within the next few days.

Now I had a few people ask how I did it, and what you need to start one, so I'm gonna have a go at explaining it as clearly as I possibly can :)

(Keep in mind this is how I'm doing it, there's so many ways to start one, and this isn't the only way, although it's obviously working, so far, knock on wood )

What you'll need:
-Something to separate each super worm into their own compartments, I am using a bead organizer which seems to work really well

This is the one I'm using, I found this one at walmart for $5 each, I looked at a couple different stores, and $5 was the cheapest ones I could find.
It's important to isolate the super worms to stress them out, in order to get them to pupate faster then they normally would. In order to stress them out, do not put anything in there with each super, no food, no bedding, nothing. You can use a lot of different things to isolate them, whether it's a plastic cup, an old film container, or anything plastic. Stay away from styrofoam, or paper cups because they can chew their way out. And also make sure you don't put holes in their reach, they can chew their way out of even a plastic cup if they can reach the hole.
-Super worms (obviously :p) you want to make sure they are rather large, the bigger worms you can get, the better.
-You'll want to poke holes in whatever you're using to isolate the supers. I found that propping the lid of the bead organizer open worked better as they can breathe easier.

So once you have them all separated into their own compartment, set them in a room that is pretty warm and dark, I found that my room itself was too cold, as they all became "lifeless". But once I moved them into my closet and shut the door, they started moving around more and eventually turned into their "C" shape.

And after about 10 days, You'll get your first pupae.

This is the stage I'm at so far. I moved my pupae into a different container (an old container the super worms came in) Which I put some oats in the bottom. You can either leave them in the organizer until it turns into a beetle, or move it. But I decided to move them because I want to clean the bead organizers once they're all out of it.
At this point you're going to want to buy something to store your beetles in once they've all turned so you're ahead of the game and not scrambling at the last minute.
This is what I got:

You can pick these up just about anywhere, I got mine from walmart for $8. You can even use regular plastic tubs with lids, whatever floats your boat :) I just thought these looked nicer.
So after another couple of weeks, your pupae will turn into beetles
These beetles will be white like this:

Then turn red like this:

And then they will turn a solid black when they're fully matured:
3136709782_7a96780cc9.jpg

Once they are fully black you'll want to move them into the container you got to store them in, in my case the 3 drawer organizer. I will be putting the beetles into the bottom drawer:

You'll want to put something in there for them to climb on, I'm using paper towel rolls, you can also use egg crate. For the substrate, I'm using some cheap plain ol' oatmeal. You can use wheat bran as well if you'd like. You'll also want to throw something in there for moisture and food, like a half of potato, celery, carrots, basically anything laying around your house that may be going bad you can throw in there. Just make sure to watch for mold, as mold can make all your super worm babies "sick" and in turn, give you a bad batch that you can't (or shouldn't) feed to your reptile.
-Once your beetles have mated, the females will be laying eggs in the substrate. After they have mated, and laid their eggs, most of the beetles will die off. What I will be doing once they all die off is, moving the ENTIRE drawer and it's contents the the middle section of the organizer. That will be known as my nursery drawer. (Make sure you have something in this drawer for moisture/food as well)

There, the eggs will all hatch, and once the babies get big enough to see, I will move that ENITRE drawer to the top section of the organizer. (Make sure you have something in this drawer for moisture/food as well)

There, the worms will stay until they have grown big enough to feed to my bearded dragon.
-And then the process will start all over again :)

I hope it was helpful to some, and if anyone sees anything they can correct me on, please do :D

AWESOME!!! I just started my Dubia colony, thinkin about starting a supers colony for variety's sake ;)

I'll let you know how it goes. Keep us updated on how well the 3-drawer-method works, I love it :D

Sounds like you feed the beetles (who used to be pupae, who came from adult supers) some potato, carrots, whatever you need to feed to keep the environment humid. What about the pupae and supers? Do they just eat thier substrate (oat)?

Thank you :) I will for sure, and definitely let me know how it works out for you if you try.
The pupae will not eat anything, they will lay in the same position (like you see in the picture) until they turn into a beetle in a few weeks. So no need to put anything to eat for them in there. As far as the supers go, I'm assuming you're talking about the baby supers? Yes you will definitely need to put something in there for them as well, just like the beetles, potato, celery, carrot..anything. I forgot to put that in there, I'll have to go edit that in :)
Thanks for pointing that out!

Wow Sara, very informative thread. Keep us updated on your progress. I am going to discuss this with the hubby and probably give it a try. The beetles sort of freak me out, but I will just hope there are no escapees.

I will :)
And let me know if you give it a try!
The beetles do freak me out as well, I'm hoping the same thing, and I'm also hoping I won't have to touch any, lol.
I'll probably be getting myself some of those super big tweezers for feeding and using those, lol.

Question!

How many Oat containers did it take to fill up your boxes? Was one of the big oat containers enough or did you have to buy more?

...I hope that made sense.

Actually, what you see in the picture is just from one big container. Although it's not deep enough so I will be getting another container in the next few days. It was really cheap, I think like $1.29 for a big container at walmart, so it's no big deal.

We've now got a total of 5 pupaes!!
3 turned into pupae while I was at work, and I only worked for like 4 hours, so I'm sure by the morning there will be a lot more :)
This is so exciting, lol.
I'm hoping to catch one in the middle of turning so I can watch :)

Sara, this is great! I love all your pics, and love reading your posts. You are doing a wonderful job with Howie, and now this! I have a dubia colony and I just keep buying supers, but a colony would be a better idea. (I'm thinking of stealing yours :D ) I've got my Chaos who will plow thru anything that moves, and then there is Lucy the new girl, she is SOOO picky! She is little, 9.5 inches, and all she will eat is supers! (EEK I know) So I am always digging thru for the little tiny ones or the white ones for her. Anyway, if I do like you then I'll have the right size for her all the time. So I have to pick your brain a bit and then I think I will lurk around on here a bit before I take the plunge.

Are you mixing anything in with the oatmeal for the substrate for the beetles or the supers? (I hear that people mix in baby cereal or bran)
Do the beetles bite?
Can you tell which beetles are M and which are F?
How long will the process take?

I want to know how the 3 Drawer thingy works too and if the beetles actually stay in there. I have to say they look like they will freak me out, my adult dubia are a little freaky to me. The bead organizer is an awesome and cheap idea. They can't crawl out before they pupate can they? I never thought to offer celery to my supers, I'm gonna try it. Mine like sweet potatoes and this morning my daughter gave them a hunk of her toaster struddle, wonder if they will eat that? Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Please keep us updated on this. I think you have a few "fans" that will be lurking around to see how this goes. Best of luck with it!

Aw thank you!!
If it all works out, and I can actually get the eggs to hatch then starting the colony is actually really easy to do. Basically the hard part is waiting. You have to wait about 10 days for the supers to pupate, and now that I have 12 (yay!!) I just have to wait for the others to pupate, and wait another couple weeks for them to turn into beetles. If I am understand it right, it could take 4-6 months to get a good colony going. But I don't feed the adult supers so I don't think it will take quite that long..
And no, the supers couldn't crawl up the plastic in the bead organizer, it was deep enough to where they couldn't reach the top of the compartment to crawl out.
I'm curious as well if the beetles will get out..lol. I hope not. I talked to someone who used the 3 drawer organizer and he said there wasn't a problem of them crawling out.
Lurk away! :)

-Nope, I am not mixing anything in with the oats, I put some of my smaller supers in there and they seem to love it.
Do the beetles bite?
-There is some controversy on this question, most people say they don't, but there's a handful that say they do. One thing for sure is that they do give off an odor if provoked. :?
Can you tell which beetles are M and which are F?
-As far as I know, the female beetle is bigger than the male beetle. Another way to identify the female beetle is their wings are not totally closed at the end. I tried finding some pictures on the internet to show you the difference but I couldn't find any :? I'll continue looking and post them if I do find some.
How long will the process take?
-About 4-6 months to get a good colony going :?

Lemme see if I have this right...

Superworms --> Pupae --> beetles --> eggs --> baby supers --> repeat

pupae dont eat anything, but everything else (except for the eggs) eats calcium rich veggies from http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.com/Nutrition.html

All the steps for makin' it happen cappen is above..

Do I have it right?
Yep, it looks like you've got it all right!
If you have any questions just ask, I'll be happy to try and answer them!!

Thanks Sara for answering my questions. The beetles give off an "odor" huh? You will have to let me, and the others, know how much it takes to provoke these things to smell and how bad the odor really is. All I can think of is these big black stink bugs we had when I lived on Camp Pendleton in S Cali :puke: They were terrible! I hope that these things are NOT that bad!

I will definitely let you know how bad it is, lol. I did hear that the smell can stay on your hands for a day or two :? :puke:
So I'm hoping I can just get away with picking them up with tweezers or gloves or something, lol

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
