Stain vs No VOC Paint

I have some left over ebony stain from the enclosure project I'm working on which I used on the doors (the sections of exposed wood that I needed to cutout for the glass inserts.

Is it safe to use wood stain inside an enclosure with a sealant? What kind of sealant would work best for this?
or
Should I paint inside the enclosure instead with a No VOC paint?

I'd think stain is fine. Just let it dry thoroughly and then coat it with some polyurethane. Once that's all dried it shouldn't produce any harmful gas.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
