Pinworms & My Beardie

Hello everyone!

Yesterday I took my bearded dragon, Rigby, to the herpetologist. The doc looked at him and told me to bring back a stool sample (I knew I had to bring one but forgot to preserve it instead of throwing it out while spot cleaning as I usually would). Today I brought a sample and he tested positive for pinworms.

I was wondering if any of you have tips for how to make him comfortable until his appointment on Thursday? I just feel so bad that he is sick and I'm wondering if there is anything I could do and if I should still feed him the same amount of crickets and collard greens. Thanks guys.

Pinworms are pretty common. Depending on how high the count is, sometimes a vet will decide not to treat it and let them manage it on their own. From what I've seen they're pretty easy to deal with using a couple of doses of meds though. Just try to keep everything as clean as possible. Clean up poop right away if you can and sanitize everything really well to help prevent re-infection. Picking up a bottle of F10SC to use for disinfecting would be a good idea. Other than that, Rigby should bounce back pretty well I'd imagine.

Thanks! I used the Zoo Med Wipe Out 1 to clean/disinfect his cage on a weekly basis. I always try to clean it as thoroughly as possible. He seems to be doing okay (more lethargic but still acting pretty normally besides that) so I think he's going to be okay. They are giving him a dewormer of some sort and antibiotics. I'll have to find out Thursday when he goes in.

Wipeout should do nicely too. I would imagine they'll offer panacur (fenbendazole) to treat the pinworms. That should work in just a couple of doses.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
