I remember a while back, there was some discussion about flourescents, and it was deemed that the repti-glo 8.0 was the safest exo-terra bulb to use, and the repti-glo 10.0 was not. A little while later, someone said exo-terra had stopped producing the 10.0 and was solely producing the 8.0. But my pet store said it was the opposite, that exo-terra had stopped producing the 8.0 and was exclusively producing the 10.0. THEN, someone on here said that a rep from exo-terra had said that they were still producing the 8.0 exclusively, but putting it in the 10.0 packaging. Follow me so far?

ANYWAYS, I'm here to say that NOTHING has changed. My pet store is still selling 8.0s in certain sizes only, and 10.0s in certain sizes only. They seem to have an endless supply of new 8.0s all the time, but only in certain sizes. I asked the pet store owner a while back what was going on with the 8.0s and he said they were discontinued, but he keeps getting these 8.0s in, but like I said, only in certain sizes (And none of the sizes are what I need unfortunetly). Also, they still stock compact bulbs. So what da heck is going on???? I thought all this stuff was settled!

And for anyone who says "Just get repti-sun 10.0", YOU pay $60 for a bulb, cause I sure am not going to. And that's about the cheapest I've found it, shipped to Canada of course. $30 for the bulb and $30 for shipping. Pet stores also sell em for $55 plus tax. Whereas Repti-glos are $23.

Well no they have not fixed the 10.0 to the best of my knowledge and I dont believe they are producing any more 8.0 they still have some in stock so I assume thats why your pet store is still recieving them in certain sizes. As for the cost verse the reptisun the answer is yes I would pay more for the reptisun over the the reptiglo because you get what you pay for.Think of it this way you can pay extra to get the correct lighting or you can take a chance and hope you dont have to pay more in the end for a vet bill. You could avoid all of this just by using an MVB bulb like the Megaray or the Trex Active Heat.In the long run they are cheaper and they are truly the best form of UVB you can get for your beardie plus you get heat and UVB in one bulb which is great.

The UVB/Heat bulbs here are around $120 so that's out of the question.

Does anyone know if Exo-Terra has plans to revamp the 10.0? It seems odd to me that this pet store keeps getting in so many 8.0s cause it's been so long since this data was uncovered about the 10.0. Why wouldn't they discontinue the 10.0 and keep the 8.0?? What types of lizards is the 10.0 good for if not Bearded Dragons?

I think Tracie was the one who was in the know the most about this...

If the 8.0 has been discontinued they're not doing a very good job of it heh... I've seen them in every pet store I've been to. And I've been to a lot in the last couple months trying to find a place in BC that sells reptisun bulbs (which appear to be none). The best place I've found is http://www.petsandponds.com/ came to about $55 after tax and shipping. I'll probably get a MVB when this has run it's course though. I didn't design my viv around having the UV light close enough, the closet Nef can get is about 11", but my basking fixture is at perfect hight for a MVB.

By they way, what are the better MVBs to get? Other than megaray because I can't find any of them... And you said in the long run they're cheaper? Do they last longer than florescent tubes? Because, as Alan said, MVB's are over $100 here, I don't know about elsewhere...
Sorry kinda off topic.

Yes, they are the best, Megas being the best, TRex being second. They last 11-13 months apprx, so yes, you are getting your $$ worth, and they provide heat ! You should use a house hold flood light with them, as dragons looooove bright lights !
Hope this helped !

What about the EXOTERRA MVB? IS that an okay brand?

I was all set to get an MVB for my enclosure that I am building, but I am worried that you won't be able to turn the temp down on it if it gets too hot in the summer...and if you turn it off, then the beardie loses his UVB also. So I ask...is it better to get ONE MVB and a florescent strip light, or a 50W halogen spot light for heat (that can go on a dimmer) AND a UVB strip light?

I am going to have a 4*2*2 enclosure. Is this even tall enough to have a MVB? Does it have to be outside of the tank or inside of the tank (with a wooden top not screen)?

*sorry about hacking this post...it just seemed like a good place to ask!

bdgal,
You can go either way, however with the size viv, I would suggest the two MVBs above, also the Power MVB as well.
You use the MVB min 12" away from the dragon, with a regular house hold flood light for extra light. As for temps, when I built my viv, I hooked up everything and ran it for a week, keeping track of all temps. I did have to add additional venting in the top ( I made two Xfire enclosures and stacked them) as the temps did get a bit high. Also, you will need "burn in" time for MVBs. This is why I waited a week and monitored before I added the dragons.
hope this helps out !

I got my repti sun 10 from petmountain.com for $19 each so try that. I got two and with shipping it was 50 dollars

A local pet store near by is going to sell me a 26" retpi sun bulb (in Canada) for $40. And that's not a bad price considering that it wont have to be shipped to me via mail and have the chance of being broken, and if it doesn't work i can just take it back to her :D

Live near Woodstock Ontario by chance?

Okay, well I had the Repti glo 10.0 / Repti Sun 10.0 question also. I told our vet about all the controversy/rumors I have read on here and other sites about the 2 bulbs. He took the time to do some research into it and actually found NO supporting evidence that either bulb is better or worse than the other. I was ready to go out and spend a ton more money to replace all my Repti Glo bulbs. I also talked to our Reptile store, this is not a mass market store but a mom and pop shop. They happen to supply the reptile lighting for our local zoo. Guess what the zoo uses, all Exo Terra lighting, which of course includes the Repti Glo. I don't know if there really was a problem at one time. I just know that in the research that I have done and the questions I have asked these are the answers I've gotten so it is just my opinion.

Yeah there was a very good study done on all bulbs, flourescent and compact. I can't quite remember the problem with the repti-glo 10.0 but there was a problem. If you put a bright white light next to the 10.0, that counteracts the effects.

Here is the link to the reports:
http://www.uvguide.co.uk/phototherapyphosphor.htm
Now the problem associated with the repticlo 10.0 is the light output seems to be damaging to the eyes and in order to safely use it it must be 10 inches away and have a bright white basking bulb beside it.The problem arises there because at 10 inches the uvb emission actually reaching your beardie isnt enough so basically you can either put it at 6 inches and take the chance on eye damage or keep it at 10 inches and take the chance at MBD,neither are viable IMO.For those interested in the Megaray the best thing to do is get them direct from reptileuv.com and yes I do believe they ship to Canada. The reason why I said they were a better financial solution was because they last a minimum of a year before the UV decay rate is no longer adequate and because you only use 1 bulb for heat and uv you also save on power so all around its a better bulb considering the Megaray is 39.99 US.

Hello,

Let me know if you want the UVB threads on the discussion of the Reptiglo 10 bulbs & I will dig up the forum discussions on the UVB board. It is still a new light, & was released before any extensive testing was done on it. There has been countless amounts of cases due to this bulb, & most of them have not been good reviews. Just do a search on this site, & there will be tons of threads come up on it.
As Frances has told me, Hagen company has not fixed the problems yet as they are waiting on the most recent test data report that is due to come out anytime now. She is working on it feverishly & I am pestering her to get it done! It is tons of time & work to get all of that testing done, then graph it, compare it, etc into reports & data configuration.
The Exoterra Solar Glo should be a mercury vapor bulb that can be pretty easily found in Canada for a decent price. It has around 125uWcm2 after 105 hours of burn in. That is the 125 watt. I am not sure of the price, possibly $40 or so? It lasts around 10+ months roughly.
That would be your best bet with UVB lights right now, being up in Canada.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
