I’m a newbie at this and I read online to turn the UVB light off at night. This morning I seen him/her in the hammock on its hind legs and stomach up against the glass sleeping. To me it seemed like he/she wasn’t breathing at all. Poked it a few times, still nothing then turned on the UVB light and opened its eyes.

I turned the UVB light off again, and did the same thing, but was still breathing..

Should I keep both lights on 24/7?? He/she hardly goes to the UVB lights, seems like only when it’s off...

Hi. At night no lights are needed. Beardies like complete darkness and cool at night. Looks like he definitely does not light the lights. If that red light is the basking light then get rid of it and get a bright white light for basking.

He loves the red basking light, normally that’s where he’s at majority of the time, I’m just so confused on all the lighting..

When I turn the UVB light off at night he goes over to that side, I’m assuming b/c it is darker.

But I’ve heard since he/she is a baby, he needs the basking light on to help regulate his/her temperature...
PLEASE HELP!!

Welcome to the forum -- your baby looks uncomfortable in the picture---- please get rid of the colored lights---- its hurting their eyes and can cause long term damage-- this is what you want for his lighting
Which UVB light should I use?
The best UVB light is a ReptiSun 10.0 fluorescent tube HO (Or Arcardia 12% in the UK). Compact or coil bulbs do not emit the proper amount of UVB light for a bearded dragon, and should not be used. Other brands, such as the Zilla Desert Series and ReptiGlo have been known to cause eye problems and other health issues with bearded dragons, and should be avoided. The reason that some UVB lights (Zilla, ReptiGlo, coils/compacts, ect.) are considered dangerous is because the wavelength of UVB that they emit is shorter and more intense than the wavelength of the "safe" lights (ReptiSun, Arcadia).
UVB lights should be replaced every 6 months. The T5’s are a strong bulb and only need to be replaced once a year – the T 8 every 6 months--- where as the T 8 are not as strong—they need to be placed inside the tank the T 5 10.0 bulb approx 10-11 inches from basking spot – the T 8 approx 6-8 inches from basking spot—the cover needs to be off the bulb for full effect of the UVB rays--

Get a bright white basking light--- as long as its keeping his temps at 90-105 for adults and 100-110 for babies its good --- all lights should be off at nite -- they like darkness w/ the temp in his tank on the cool side 80 during the day and no lower than 65 at nite -- no colored bulbs!!
What size tank do you have? Here are some suggestions for substrate--
Non adhesive shelf liner -- easy to clean w/ vinegar/ water in spray bottle 50-50 mixture and can be bought at Home Depot or Lowes etc... cheap and the bugs dont get under it
Slated Ceramic Tile-- needs to be cut to tank size and easy to clean w/ vinegar/ water-- cheap- I would recommend the tile for a permanent enclosure -- w/ paper towels under the tile for the loose watery/ urate--
Please if you have more questions ask
thanks

Thank you for all the information!!!
So as of now I have the red bulb that is 75 watts, he seems to love it, that’s where he spends most of his time, but for his health I will get rid of it and replace it. For the UVB bulb I have the Repticon 10.00 UVB, 13 watts, which I’m assuming I need more Watts.

I have serveral questions.

When I turn the UVB light off during the night, he goes to the corner like this and sleeps. He’s done this the past 2 nights. I’ve had him since Saturday, since he’s s young I’m scared to turn all the lights off since I have no extra heat for him. Would this be a problem?

The red lighting is for his basking light.
What do I replace that with for basking? A regular light with the same watts? Or higher?

Also been told to get a day light/ night light/ a basking light and the UVB light. People have told me to keep the day one on during the day, turn that off at night along with the basking light & the UVB light and just keep the night light one on only during the night.

Ugh please help! Break it down, I’m so confused and don’t want me little guy to die!!!

Also, we have a desert like substrate that I got at a pet shop. Its not all rocks, ifs not all sand, it literally looks like a desert ground.

Its called a Sand mat for substrate? That is fine for now but this is what you need for his lighting --- NO lights on at nite at all ------- a UVB Reptisun 10.0 either a T5 HO bulb or a T 8 the T5 takes a flat fixture --- the T8 takes a regular fixture -- those bulbs are TUBE not COIL-- Pet Smart will carry the T 8 fixture and bulbs --- get the tube no coil--when get the fixture take the cover off the bulb------ the red basking light get rid of it -- you can get a basking bulb from PetSmart called a Exo Terro basking bulb - they are kinda spendy like $13 and there are other bulbs out there that I have never tried for basking that people use that work -- you can get either a 75 watt of the Exo Terro or a 100 watt - its trial and error w/ those --- you need a Infrared Heat Gun from Walmart or Home Depot or Lowes -- they are the best way to get accurate basking temps --- they run around $10--- you need to keep your tank w/ temps like this cool side during the day 80 or so at nite 65 -70 temps should not drop below 65 - they like it cool for them to sleep --- basking spot should be 90-105 for adults-- babies like it warmer 100-110-- if for some reason temps drop below 65 at nite you can get a CHE- No Light- (ceramic heat emitter) it takes a dome fixture and cost around $40 or --- you can also get a daylight white bulb for your dark side of tank for lighting --- I have just a 60 watt Household bulb on my cool side of tank and temps run around 72 at nite and 80's during the day-- i like my tank lit up during the day -- all lights go off at nite--- during the winter my CHE stays on 24/7 and goes off during the summer-- please ask if you need more help--- I should mention rule of thumb lights should be on 12 hrs on and 12 hrs off ---

Sorry for all the confusion. As a newbie I’m trying to understand.
I have the Repticon 10.00 13 watts.
I need to up that or get a new one?

I will replace the red light I have now with a different basking light (white) that is 75-100 watts? And that could be a regular house bulb as well?

And get another source for heat, that stays on at night? Or all day?

So total I would need 2 lights or 2?
And

Only if you need the CHE - what does his tank get down to at nite????? --- the UVB needs to be a Reptisun -- its a Zoo Med brand-- I have never heard of Repticon--- as far as basking you can try a 75 watt Household bulb but you need a Infrared Heat gun to take that basking temp-- you want a accurate temp of his basking spot-- 90-105 adult-- 100-110 for a baby--- So you need one good UVB light and a basking white light---- get your lights in order and things will start to come together -- if you haft to take the info I have given you print it off and go to the store and get what you need for him/ her- or if you need to google the UVB lights to see what they look like and go from there --

Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
