Hi,
sad story. I was excited to have adopted a beardie today. He was a little baby. I placed him in a tank with my adult beardie. I went to Church and when I came back I could not find my little guy. The only explanation that I have is that my other beardie ate him. I hope this sad news helps others so they do not do the same mistake I did.

Sorry you had to learn that the hard way, but yeah adults see anything moving smaller than them as food :(

Never house two beardies together, especially not after just getting a new one. Quarantine is important since you don't know what kind of diseases or parasites the new one might have. If you do get another one in the future, make sure you get a whole new setup and never let the little one interact with the adult unsupervised (if at all).

:( Hopefully people will take this as a hard learned lesson. Sorry again for your loss.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear about your new beardie :( :( Even when they're well-fed, beardies do tend to see smaller lizards as a snack unfortunately, like the above posters said :(

I had enough food in the tank for both of them! Lesson learned. I don't want a second beardie anymore. Why do they do that? I thought that the bigger one might be a mother to the smaller one.

Reptiles have no sense of family or packs. Once a gravid female lays her eggs, she'll abandon them. Reptiles are incredibly different from mammals and have evovled different methods of rearing their young.

Actually, not all reptiles abandon their young. Crocodiles and Alligators stay with their young for like the first few months. Then once the babies are old enough the mother leaves them. But beardies are not like this and will eat smaller lizards. Another reason why I think people who are murderers are called cold-blooded, because reptiles are cold-blooded and can be cruel at times. Cold-blooded is usually placed right next to heartless. With that being said it doesn't mean they really are like that. Beardies bond closely with their owners, but most of the time they are doing what instinct tells them. Anyways, just had to put in my two cents, I am sorry for your loss.

I'm having a hard time believing that everyone is so understanding about this. Minimal research would tell you up front NOT to house together. I'm not understanding in this situation as it was MY baby that got eaten today. Considering what they poor guy has been through with his smaller siblings beating him up a few months ago and healing from his injuries, I thought this would be a good and loving home for him. Now here I sit, hysterical and sent home from work because I'm horrified that my little man is dead, and all he can say is "I'm sorry.." "Oops..." ? Since this is a public site, I'm keeping a lot of this to myself as I respect the readers on here too much, but my baby was ripped in half, probably slowly, and eaten piece by piece. I'm so sick at myself for letting him go to a person who obviously did not research as "Don't house together" is typically the FIRST thing any care sheet says. Forgive me for those who aren't in my shoes, but look at your beardie and imagine him/her being quite literally being ripped to pieces when all you wanted to do was find him or her a good loving home. Ignorance kills.

Don't need the warning since I already know (from research) as should you but sorry you had to learn the hard way, at least you didn't see it go down.

I imagine people are being 'understanding' as it's too late to change anything now. If the OP had come in and said 'i got a new baby and put him in the tank with my adult' people would have shouted at him/her to immediately separate them, but by the time this post was written, it was too late, and if people had posted stuff along the lines of 'omg that's so stupid, i can't believe you didn't do your research enough to know that would happen', they'd have been told off by the mods for being unhelpful.

Maybe this thread will do some good and save a beardie's life in future by catching the eye of some other new owners and making them realise that housing babies with adults shouldn't ever be contemplated.

Poor little guy :(

I had 100% the same thoughts.
I mean yea its happened and unfortunately you cant to anything about it anymore, but ,and I dont mean to sound mean, the poster didnt even sound that upset about it.Like I would scream and cry and blame myself and would probably cry for like days.

Please, please gather information before(!!!) you buy a(baby) beardie so that stuff like this doesnt happen.I still remember a thread posted a few weeks ago which actually shows a baby being pulled out if a bigger beardie.I will never forget this.Soooo sad :(

It did not sound like he cared at all. Thank you for agreeing with me.

Hello. I realize that you're upset, and I'm very sorry for your loss. However, making OP feel bad isn't going to help anything. I'm sure OP was upset about his mistake, but what can we do? We're human. We mess up. I realize that he should've done more research before taking in another beardie, I get that 100%. But it's not like any of us have never messed up before. Sure, his mistake lead to a greater consequence for both you and him, but nobody is perfect. People are people. Animals are animals. All OP was trying to do was help, you shouldn't blame him for that. And again, making him feel bad will, in no way, help. I'm sure he's very sorry for what he's accidentally done. Please don't mistake my words with aggressiveness or defending the OPs actions - that's not my intent. I certainly feel sorry for you, and I'm sure he feels just as bad. I'm just trying to stop any more heartbreak from occurring.

Everybody, do research until you think you've done too much. Then, do a little more. There's no such thing as being too safe, so just be sure you know how to take proper care of these animals, and be sure they're going to good homes.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
