Hi, we have a older male bearded dragon (14-18 years) with a swollen leg. We are not sure if it is a puncture wound or something else. He is very alert and taking food and water. We noticed it yesterday. He is always supervised out of cage and there has been no accidents. We're are looking for a reptile vet in our area. In the meantime what is your opinion and recommended home treatment?

Wow your guy has some age on him --- its great he is still going :)
Are you feeding crickets? Has he been outside to where he was bitten? It almost looks like a bite -- in the meantime you can put some raw unpasteurized honey like Manuka on the wound - if its infected that will start to kill the infection
here is a website to find a vet in your area

Thank you for your response and suggestion.
He is not allowed outdoors (usually in the bed room or living room and no other animals). I checked his cage for bugs. Due to his age he does not eat live bugs, unless hand fed. Thanks for the website, your help is appreciated.

Hello,

Wow, that is an old dragon indeed!
As suggested, try using the raw unpasteurized honey or manuka honey on that area initially.
I don't think it would be gout, but you never know. How much protein does he get weekly?
It almost looks like some type of insect bite too but not sure. Sometimes gout can cause areas
of swelling similiar to that, which look like an infection.
I am glad to hear he is alert right now which is a great sign. I hope you can get him into a vets
soon, to be sure it isn't a bad infection starting.

Let us know how he is doing.

Hi, Tracie
Thank you for your advise, we have been putting the honey on his leg. He gets most of his protein from vegetables or his dragon gel and that is limited. He is still alert and enjoying the extra attention.

Hello,

That's great he is still alert. How is his foot/ankle looking, has it gotten worse?
I would definitely watch it closely though so it doesn't get worse. There aren't any
indicators of gout, correct?

Hi,
The swelling on the leg has gone down and is localizing around the bite or puncture. Thankfully he is not showing any signs of gout and continues to be alert and eating/drinking well. Keeping wound clean. We are housebound due to a snowstorm but have found a reptile vet that sees patients on a first Come-first serve Basis about an hour away.

Hello,

Bless him, it is looking better, finally. I am sure it doesn't feel the greatest! I wonder what could
have bitten him, a cricket probably? I certainly hope it wasn't a spider of some type.
Continue the treatment on that area, to help the infection. I hope he keeps improving for you!

Update: First, my family would like to thank everyone for their concern and tips. We were able to make it after the snowstorm to a reptile vet. Unfortunately, the diagnosis is worse for Spike than we were prepared for. The X-ray shows bone cancer. Due to his age, surgery is not advised. We brought time home with medication. He will spend his last days being loved and doted on with all of his favorite foods and plenty of warm baths. Happy New Years Eve... may 2021 be a better year for everyone.

Hello,

Oh no, I am sorry to hear that! So they are positive it is bone cancer? Did they do blood
work along with x-rays?
You could try some CBD oil for him, it has shown a lot of promise for cancer & overall health
in reptiles.
Which medication did they give for him?
He is very well off with you & will be happy. Hopefully he will still have a good amount of time
left, too but I am glad that he is not alone & gets plenty of love & attention.
Keep us posted on him.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
