ok a little background: we have two bearded dragons, both about 18 months old. they both just laid their first clutch of unfertile eggs. our first dragon laid them all (20) just fine and went back to being her normal self. our other one laid about 24 eggs over about 3 weeks. she barely moved during it and wouldnt eat. now shes done i believe as she hasnt laid any for two weeks now. but she still cant move on her own and when she tries she cant seem to use her right front leg. she was super pale and we gave her some calcium (and still are) and her color came back but she still wont move or if she tries she drags herself around and even uses her head to help pull her around. she will not eat on her own and we dont think she drinks on her own either. so we have been opening her mouth and placing food in (she will eat it then) and we use a small syringe to put water in her mouth so she drinks. all food is dusted in calcium powder as the vet said to do so. she doesnt seem to be in any pain? we arent sure what to do as we have changed the lights, (everything is correct in her enviroment) and tried all the vet said. we have no idea whats happened and why shes like this. and i havent been able to find any information online. any ideas are appreciated!

Poor girl....is your vet a true reptile vet ? If she's that sick she may have more eggs left or she may even have had an egg burst inside. Ask about getting an Xray done to see if there are more eggs and she is possibly eggbound. Bloodwork would be good, too.

Can you post a pic of her BTW ? Here's how :

i dont think she is bound up because she defacates and urinates just as well as usual like she did before the eggs. she is attentive and alert. but she just will not show interest in food or water and she has so much trouble moving around.

Hello,

Poor girl, she appears alert in the picture. Maybe she is having calcium issues? I definitely hope she isn't egg bound or having trouble there.
Are you giving extra calcium for her?
Which UVB light is she under?
So far, it doesn't look like she has a black beard though, correct?

These dragons were not bred ....they both laid infertile eggs. Be sure to read the info that the o.p. has in the opening thread. And they certainly ARE very capable of laying eggs at 18 months, it's totally natural. Someone , somewhere years ago pulled out the arbitrary number of 2 years old as the minimum age to breed females....this is totally inaccurate info I've seen posted in the forums that just gets passed along. It's not true at all and that's why many dragons lay slugs before the age of 2 yrs.

@Drache no she barely ever shows her beard. but yes we are dusting all her food in calcium powder. twice a day. her light is a brand new reptisun 10.0 uvb item#FS-C10. the vet thought it was a calcium defficiancy as well but im not entirely sure if it would cause the extra problems?

Dusting the insects is very hit and miss and hard to really know if your beardie is getting as much dietary calcium in the dust on the bugs or in the greens and insects, might be worth while considering switching over to sometime similar to CalciVet and giving this by measured (by vol by body mass) orally by syringe.

CalciVet is very sweet tasting and I've never had problems getting skinks to take it , not needed it for my beardies but I think they'd like it's taste too.

In my opinion she needs an x-ray immediately, like now! It doesn't matter if she is having bowel movements or not, that does not at all mean that she isn't egg-bound or that an egg ruptured while inside her. Yes, calcium deficiency is very common in females right after they lay because they are using so much to make the eggs, but the fact that she's no moving and really can't move, combined with loss of appetite is what is indicative of an egg-binding issue.

I'd be getting her to a vet immediately, whether it be a reptile vet or not at this point, obviously a reptile vet is better because if she is egg-bound she will need a reptile vet to operate. But any vet should be able to do an x-ray and look for eggs or internal bleeding.

In my opinion if it had been simply due to calcium deficiency she would be moving by now, and the other thing is that in my experience after they lay a clutch they usually eat a ton, they're ravenous. The fact that she has no appetite and cannot move due to weakness and/or discomfort or pain scares me, as I have a lot of experience with egg-binding in birds, and that's unfortunately what it looks like to me. I hope not, but you cannot afford to wait another day to find out. Egg-binding is extremely painful and 100% fatal without intervention. There's little you can do at home for an egg-binding beardie, birds you can somewhat help a bit, but I doubt that steam, a warm bath while in a really steamy bathroom with the door shut, rubbing olive oil on and around her vent, etc. I doubt will help a beardie.

Please get her to a vet immediately, today, ASAP, as dying from egg-binding or a ruptured egg causing internal injuries is excruciatingly painful. I hope that I'm wrong, but it really does seem like the symptoms of egg-binding.

That's good that you got her in soon. Hopefully an egg didn't burst and if so that the antibiotics will do their work [ Or for whatever might be going on ] Best wishes for your pretty girl !

Hello,

Oh that's good they did a blood test & got to her so soon!
I agree, I hope an egg didn't burst after her last clutch but at least she has been started on antibiotics
already & should hopefully recover fully.
I am glad to hear you are using a good UVB light & supplementation for her also.
Definitely keep us posted on her!

I'm so glad you took her, whether an egg broke and caused peritonitis or she has some other type of infection, she needs the antibiotics so she's in the right place. Hopefully the reptile specialist can rule out an egg breaking inside of her, and narrow down what the cause of the infection is. You did the right thing, she wasn't going to make it without treatment immediately.

I'll be thinking about her, hopefully she'll be fine.

Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
