I have a bearded dragon who came to me as a rescue, he's been with us for a year now. 6 months after getting him and rehabbing him he began to get swollen limbs. So I took him to a vet the minute their exotic vet was in(a day later). She examined him, we went over husbandry, diet, etc. She immediately recommended X-rays($95) and blood work($134) however she felt X-ray was more important and refused to dx with gout even tho my father and several bearded dragon breeders I spoke to were certain it was indeed gout. I am of course not made of money so I could only do one at a time, then the vet left that office so they no longer had an exotics vet. It has been a struggle to get this guy to eat anything, to drink anything but we have been force feeding slurries with veggie critical care mix(has alfalfa in it) and giving him water, black cherry, probiotics, an all in one calcium/vitamin mix from scales exotics. He had perked up after my stays in the hospital for some serious issues(late October 2016)and I felt like maybe we would beat this after all. The vet refused to recommend or start him on ANYTHING for possible gout. I took him in a day after the swelling started! I feel this vet has greatly robbed both him and I of a good outcome. From beginning of November until just last week he was doing great, eating, moving about, still very swollen however he was still able to move. My husband and I are really in a bad spot financially, I absolutely cannot bring him to another vet. I can afford a couple of smaller things like the allopurinol I was reading about on here. But I have no idea how to give it. I am running to see if I can find this locally at a Whole Foods store but I am afraid he is beyond my help. I don't want to lose him, but I don't want to force him to suffer. He was starved almost to death, literally, when he came to me. He has become my therapy animal to help me in dealing with my disabilities. My heart is truly broken and I want to try whatever I can afford to try. Once my husband and I are financially back on our feet we will be taking him to a vet for the blood work if he makes it that far. My poor sweet Toothless is absolutely miserable.
